For over an year, almost two, I have been stuck in my writing. I wrote one 120 page screenplay, then rewrote it. It was a supernatural spy movie and it was just one chapter in what I hope will one day become a saga. Then I began writing another chapter of that saga and half way trough I decided to give it a break. When I began trying to rewrite that second chapter ( this was last summer) I wrote 10 pages, then I stopped because I wasn't sure of a lot of things like theme, character flaw, and some plot elements. My understanding of the story grew. And this just kept happening; I would write ten pages, then start again because I felt what I wrote wasn't right. Add the other activities I had to do, and a whole year passed with me still stuck on this story. I thought "Let me just write a bad first draft of the story, then I can better form my ideas from there". This story and this supernatural spy world may not be the only things I am passionate about, but they are my favourite when it comes to my stories. I read Save the Cat by Blake Snyder and when this summer began, I outlined my story and I was confident I would get a first draft down on paper, plus I was feeling passionate about it. I wrote 10 pages in two a weeks, then got stuck. I got back on it and wrote 20 more pages in a month. I know the writing is good for a first draft, but it is going way too slow and I lost a lot of the passion I had for this script. SHOULD I KEEP AT IT? Some say to me, "just try harder and finish the script". Others say "take a step back, write at something else, then come back to it after you got unstuck". I did also write a short, before outlining the script and it was a great short, everyone liked it. What I want to do? I want to get this story off my chest, but I don't want to spend another year doing it! If anyone has any advise or thinks they can help me, I would appreciate it greatly.

THANK YOU AMANDA! I feel like this post is meant for me! Honestly, it feels like someone came down in a helicopter and handed me a bottle of cold water on my third day of walking hopelessly through the desert. I have been struggling with this exact problem for almost an year. And ohh the questions: "What is wrong with me?" "What am I doing wrong?" "How should I get out of this mess" they persisted and were made so much harder by the thought that I was alone in this. I could not write more than one or two pages without going back and starting over because I felt I could have done better. That eventually led me to not doing anything at all. I want to ask you a few questions regarding the mountain that is the entertainment industry. Maybe besides the bottle of cold water you can give me some tips on how to get to the nearest village ;)

Hello, my name is Radu. I am a writer/screenwriter, i am 22 years old, I am in my third year of law school and I live in Romania's capital city Bucharest. My dilemma is this: Writing OR Screenwriting. Let me elaborate: I wrote and re wrote one script (120 pages) and half of a second script (same length) like everyone i was terrible at the beginning ( my first, first draft was 220 pages long and I didn't see anything wrong with it at that point =)) ) but over the years, by reading materials and attending webinars, I got better, a lot better, and I think now with enough time I could write pretty good script. The reason I don't is every time i sit and begin writing I am bombarded by the thought "Wouldn't this time be better spent writing / learning how to write a novel" I always was more of a movie person than a bookworm, but recently my passion for reading has grown a bit. I am familiar to the answer "Don't bother yourself with this, just write what you love most" I tend to think writing novels or short stories would be more fun due to the fact that I am allowed more freedom with the story. But just putting the screenwriting aside, a craft I was getting better and better at, is not a decision I should take without consideration if I want to eventually become a known and respected writer and screenwriter ( and I do want that). So, is it a mistake to think about how this decision might affect my goal? Is it recommended or possible, in general, for someone to craft his skills in both screenwriting and writing, while also going through law school? Is it a good idea, since I don't feel I read enough books to begin with, to focus on writing screenplays for now and maybe switch to writing novels when the books I read have grown in number? I think this last idea might be my best option. Any opinion, answer or recommendation would be greatly appreciated. This question has haunted me for long enough, stoping me from enjoying my creative process, making it hard for me to relax and even, in part, distracting me from making connections on stage 32. I ask you all to help me terminate this dilemma and if you need any more info, just let me know. Thank you!

Hello everybody! I've been a member for a few months, but I haven't been very active...until now. I am an aspiring writer from Bucharest, Romania and I recently began my third year of law school here. I wrote and re-wrote, one complete screenplay and am working on my second one. I am a big movie goer and I'm not that far behind with TV series either. My favourite writing domains are espionage, politics and history, in my stories I sometimes like to combine them with fantastical elements such as angels and demons. I made the mistake of taking what I now know was an unnecessary break from writing and I am trying to get back in shape. Both in terms of writing skills and knowledge of the industry I'd say I am just getting started, so any piece of advise about web-sites, the pros and cons of writing VS screenwriting or anything else will be greatly appreciated and I will be sure to mention your name in my speech when I get my Oscar =)))
