Don't misunderstand, I have loved and do love the Festival industry, it's just a one sided game and only one side profits. It's not the filmmaker...

The media industry is always disrupted by new technologies……….from broadcast ; to cable; VHS; DVD; broadband, streaming etc .
The next era that will take place in the film/media industry will likely be the emerging force of BLOCKCHAIN and the distributed ledger technology.
The film industry new 2.0 !!!
The blockchain is a decentralized digital ledger that offers a way to verify and record transactions over a secure, encrypted platform. It will deliver much-needed transparency to all types of businesses including film, with its intricate deal structures and often-antiquated reporting systems. Originally created and utilized for Bitcoin in 2009, the block chain technology has many attributes that may fundamentally change the way business is conducted.
Some areas that blockchain could significantly alter transaction flows in the film industry:
• Transparency, efficiency and security
• Crypto Crowdfunding for Indie films
• Sales and Distribution Networks
• Compensation Through Smart Contracts
• Copyright and Ownership
• Combating Piracy
• Elimination of middlemen
• Crypto-Linked Streaming Services
• Global Streaming Platforms
• More Expansive Digital Rental and Ownership Models
A new era is on the horizon for the film industry…… there is much more to come.
MAY THE BLOCKCHAIN FORCE BE WITH YOU !!!
My plan is to go over each of the sections listed above and explore how Blockchain technology can improve the film business and the distribution arena. Ive written a number of books on the film business and this will be a new book soon.
Rohit Kumar yes I think that's exactly right and many players will necessarily get burned or jaded once the bubble repeatedly flattens out, or perhaps it remains a specialized boutique players' sandbox.
Thanks for sharing this, John. The film industry is still at the very early stages of discovering the potential of blockchain. I have seen attempts in financing and distribution. Also, how will the flow of financing funds and revenues and recoupment be benefited by blockchain?

Suffice to say ...movie investors can make sure their money is being used for film-making purposes, and companies like MovieCoin have even created cryptocurrency for movie investors to be able to track their funds and keep film makers accountable as well..
And don't forget smart contracts.............more soon

Expand commentFacet.TV is launching a large series of exclusive NFT offerings and welcomes other producers to contact us (team@facet.tv) if they are interested in participating. "Traditional" cryptocurrency has literally no place in film finance, despite the wish to the contrary, and literally dozens of attempts to use it since the advent of bitcoin. Why? because the purpose of a blockchain is "transactional security" plain and simple, and that never has been and never will be an issue in film finance. Further, it is a minefield of SEC issues. There are other reasons. However, NFTs, which are not new but currently coming into vogue, are in fact simple digital merchandise, and their use makes a lot of sense in ancillary rights for producers.

Expand postI've been blogging and teaching film production techniques from development to distribution for a number of years. I've worked on a lot of projects ranging from $10K indie student films to multimillion dollar gigs. I've always been helping and working for other people on their projects. I've worked from the beginning on some and i've been hired under non-disclosure to rescue others behind the scenes. One thing i've seen time and time again is a new or seasoned indie film maker with a good or even great script looking to shoot a $5M, $10M, even $20M project right out of the box. I watch them struggle and eventually fail. I only hope ( and your going to FLAME me for this ) is that they fail quickly. Why. Because NO ONE is going to give a first time filmmaker $20M to make a movie. And the sooner their "dream" is crushed, the better it is for them. Why do you ask? How come i'm such an evil bitch to wish this upon my fellow film Makers? Actually I pray to god they get to make their films and an angel comes in and give them the $20M... i'd be the first on their cheerleading team and the first to purchase the movie to watch. But in reality, the sooner they get over it, the sooner the film maker will start seeing reality and start making movies... Actual , real, movies. They can... YOU can. But first you need to put that $20M script away in a drawer or give it to an agent to push while you start working on your fist feature film that will cost you maybe $10,000 or $20,000 or even $50,000. A number you can actually raise from family, friends, your piggy bank and crowd funding. I've posted before about this and some people love it and some tell me to go "bugger off". Now worries, I'm pretty thick skinned.. you have to be to be in this business. Anyway, back to my point. So I've been talking about this for quite some time in person during lectures, and teaching, on the web and on a couple global webinars. Recently I was asked "Ms Hilton, have YOU ever made a $50K or under film yourself?" .... I paused and considered. "NO.. I have never made a small budget project of my own." I've helped others do it, but I haven't slogged thru the mud myself. and since I believe in putting my money where my mouth is... I'm going to make an under $50K feature film with friends, family, my piggy bank and crowd funding. AND, i'm doing it in public so you can follow the adventure and watch my team and I successfully create a solid micro-budget feature and make money on it , or you can watch the up coming train wreak and see me fail miserably. Either way you... and I, will learn something. So Please follow our project SUBCONSCIOUS on the following web sites. http://www.facebook.com/subconsciousthefilm and http://www.subconsciousfilm.com If nothing else you'll get a deep look into making a micro budget film that looks like you spent way way more on it!
Excellent advice Georgia!
Great you are the right person to produce my script. My scripts are both entertaining and inspiritional . Pl read my scripts posted here and thanks
Hi Padma... I do produce movies for other people and companies, but I do so for a fee and a standard percentage.
Sorry In India the system is different the Producer will pay money .Anyway I am a middle class woman with no income, and only a passion for writing .
no worries... Executive producers pick up the tab here in the States. Producers make your movie get made, from finding money, development, staffing up, pre-pro, managing production, managing post, dealing with delivery and finding distribution....

Thanks for the share! What has been your experience on the festival circuit, if you don't mind me asking? Did you see that AFM is sticking to a digital market this year? Do you think digital festivals could be an improvement on this situation? Would love to know your thoughts!
I'm happy to hear AFM is being prudent with the current health climate! I have not had an opportunity to read that news.

Film Festivals and Indie Filmmakers need to evolve with the changing times. Streaming is an emerging viable solution for content delivery for Festivals.
We ran 16 different events/festivals in 2020 and I can tell you it's a carbon copy of a live festival, it's just playing on your TV or computer. The one loss is the "in person vibe." You are still having a Q & A with the viewers who wish to attend. The filmmakers create a 1 minute intro video so they can introduce their film. It plays prior to every "click." and the beauty of virtual is, filmmakers can be present at every screening for any festival anywhere in the world. Follow the screening up with a live
Q & A and it's the same protocol as a live event.
It boils down to who you use for your platform and what services they provide. Our festival clients are going hybrid (while they can still have live events.) They're having live opening and closing weekends with the mid week being virtual. I don't think virtual festivals are going anywhere. Now Fests & their BOD see how cost effective they are, they may rethinking the mold.
Technology has evolved by leaps and bounds and I think festivals realize they may need to get on board if Covid continues and they want to stay alive. Last year there were a ton of inquiries but some of them didn't seem to be pioneers and decided not to have a festival at all. Once again the Indie Creative gets the short end.
The bulk of our clients last year were clients of our DCP business and they know the quality and reliability of our work. It doesn't hurt that we also have 2+ decades of experience in the Tech Dept. We know what they need, when they need t and we're their built in tech crew for their virtual needs. We get them because we are them...
Hybrid is here to stay. Virtual will be as well if they can't get covid under control. Be a part of the solution folks...

I attend all the film markets ...AFM, Berlin, Cannes and its there that the real commercial activity of selling indie films happens.
I agree with John Rodsett.
