I have no time for any woman who feels she needs to use her gender to prove a point. Equality is equality, and articles like the misguided one by the equally misguided Ms. Silverstein do more damage. When I am sorting out crew for my films, it comes down to one simple question and that is Can they do the job? If women really want equality, then why do they need to keep bringing attention to their gender? Perhaps if you don't get the job, it's because your not talented/experienced/good enough to do it. I have in my time as a director come across 2 occasions of gender bias. In both projects I was chosen to direct because I was a woman, and the pieces involved partial nudity with a female actress. And not one man made any comment about the job only being open to female directors. If someone posted a job on a site specifically requesting a male director, how many women would get their backs up about it?
I am a film producer, screenwriter and director.I have not been given a chance but I keep taking my chances! lol

Expand commentI think a lot of the US/UK divide comes down to historically how the studios operated. After the break-up of the studios many decades ago in the US there was no longer a "system" for becoming a director. These days in the US you just have to hustle and pitch yourself and get attention where you can. In the UK the BBC had a very studio-like system for curating and training talent and directors were more like employees than free agents. If you are someone like the BBC who specifically builds its stable of talent then you are far more likely to be under pressure to foster a more equitable ratio of employees. The UK film industry also focuses on subjects that generally attract more women to the field: documentary/journalism, drama/mystery and theater. Compare popular BBC shows like Downton or House of Cards to popular TV shows in the US like Game of Thrones and Agents of Shield. Intellectual drama vs Violence and sci-fi/fantasy.

Have to wonder if quality suffers at the expense of the drive to create content while maintaining a living. Unfortunately I doubt the US "free" "free-market" capitalist system would tolerant any similar government involvement to training and mentoring aspiring filmmakers.
Thanks for connecting, Mathurine. Nice to meet you. Cheers!
