Dextar Effects was formed in 1991 by Chester “Grubby” Dextar, a veteran of such productions as Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, The X-Files, Millenium, The Outer Limits, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation, Jack Brown Genius, Back of the Y and The Devil Dared Me To.

Established to provide specialist prop-making, custom costuming and sculpture services for the film, theater, television and event industries, the workshop is based in Christchurch, New Zealand, with a mobile unit operating throughout Australasia and Canada.
