If its conveyed to the audience in the right way then I cant see you having many issues. But like any movie it may not appeal to everyone.

Maybe I'm missing some context, but I am honestly baffled by the advice you've been given. What am I missing? Rhetorical. It's certainly possible there is some missing context here that would clearly explain the reason behind that advice.

I just ask my instructor direct as that. Me: To get recognition should I just have my name on my movie or can I have a production company name also.

OK, let's use a basketball analogy. If you market yourself as a potential NBA Center and a Point Guard, people are going to think, "This guy is clueless. You can't be both a Center and a Point Guard." If your market yourself as a potential NBA Shooting Guard who can also run the Point, then that's focused and believable, right? If you market yourself as a director who has a production company, that is a completely focused statement. You're a director who understands physical production and can manage the production of content. How is that a poor way to market yourself? If you wanted to market yourself as a director and a post production supervisor, yeah, I'd say pick a road. But a director who has experience producing content, that is a plus! There are of course situations in which you want to focus on one and not the other, but generally speaking, there is nothing wrong for an independent filmmaker to have a production company that is capable of producing content. Those things go hand-in-hand.

I saw this movie last year- this time it was called Godzilla.

I have directed, written and produced six short films over the past two years, and have tackled complex and simple narratives. The fact you can make so many of them in a short amount of time and for less money is a great thing because you can learn the basics of filmmaking very quickly, especially with all the great online tutorials and resources that are out there today. They are also a great opportunity to experiment and try things out. More importantly, they provide you with experience before throwing yourself into the gruelling and long process of making a feature. Short films work better when they are very simple, as does any good film (the best advice I have been given by award winning filmmakers is to keep my stories 'simple stupid'), but it depends how much time you have to tell your story. I am very comfortable making at least five more short films before I work on my first independent feature, because they are a lot harder to produce and require more money and manpower to get off the ground. It can take years to get a feature film produced and made, and they they often require a larger production team and crew. By making short films first, you are more likely to receive more favours from friends and contacts on your short films, granted you help them out on their own projects and have hot food on your sets. It helps to have made short films first because they give you experience of telling stories and working with actors, as well as leading and communicating with a crew. It's definitely easier to find a smaller crew to make a short film, and there are plenty of great actors who want more footage for their showreels and can be paid a lot less on short films. Hope this helps :)

I think you should do whatever is the quickest way to get you in a room with actors and a DP trying to make something cool. The quickest route to that is doing a short. The fun of actually making something will keep you motivated. Spending a year trying to get a feature script right and then another two years trying to get the money isn't much fun. The biggest journey starts with a single step!

Depends on your resources. Is it as simple as picking between the 2? Or do you have stronger resources for one vs the other? Rhetorical.

Just saw it. So awesome a lot going on, but you don't get lost. It was also great to finally see a strong female lead in a mainstream movie.

Shawn, thanks for posting that link. Great read. It was especially encouraging to hear someone else say that a writer is not necessarily strongest working from planning mode, as I rarely write that way. Anyway, got to see the movie last night, and it definitely lived up to the hype. Too bad my husband fell asleep. He doesn't know what he missed out on.

Thank you for the response Hugh. With what you said could you get a studio on board with that complexity, because this could just be me, but it seems like the content now a days has plot holes, poor dialog, and poor characters.

If you were to write Inception or Interstellar as a first time writer, I'm pretty sure the answer would be "No." Those High-Complex-Concept movies got made based on the Nolan name. (The story goes that producers only green-lighted Inception in order to keep Nolan happy and so get him to do Dark Knight Rises. They were nay-saying the film even after it opened to huge box-office numbers). If you're talking about a first time outing, your best bet is to keep the budget down (ie. not too many super-duper blackhole effects), this decreases risk for a producer. Of course that's just one opinion. Everything is impossible right up until someone does it.

O.K so I should take a "Crawl before you walk" approach?

Yes, I'd suggest you earn the producer's confidence first. Consider it a challenge to write an intelligently complex script with few special effects.
