My passion for cinema started in my early twenties when I was working part-time at Warner Village Cinema where I watched every film the company screened between 2001 and 2003. In 2008, I graduated from Taiwan’s top filmmaking programme at Shih Hsin University with a BA degree in Cinema Production. Over the two years, I worked on shooting and editing corporate work, event content, short documentaries, and music videos.
In 2010, I joined the Academy Award-winning special effects team of Life of Pi as Production Assistant, under the supervision of Tom Fisher, Don Elliot, and Andrew Miller. I organised local Taiwanese services to fulfil SPFX's construction and shooting requirements. I also had the responsibility to accurately translate the onset supervisor’s instructions to the local technicians and outsourced service providers.
In 2012, I returned to the editing bay as Series Editor of the TV romance drama ‘I Love You’ broadcast on Formosa TV Network. Through my editing of the first four episodes, the show achieved higher ratings than almost any other program airing in that time slot. In the spring of 2014, I began studying at London Film School and graduated with MA in Filmmaking degree in 2017.
In December 2017, I began working with NGOs as I led the Association of Taiwan Journalists (ATJ) as the Secretary-General. Through my leadership, the Union forged a formal partner relationship with Reporters Without Borders (RSF). The ATJ later hosted an executive-level meeting for the world’s largest journalists’ organisation — the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) — and had the foreign ministry arrange a meeting between the Federation officials and President Tsai Ing-wen. I also worked closely with RSF on its initiative Journalism Trust Initiative (JTI) in the EU standard body CEN. In 2019, I was elected to the 15 IFJ Advisors by the global congress in Tunisia.
I currently work as a freelance editor in film and television. I am seeking my next filmmaking opportunity. Please let me know how I can collaborate and support you with your film or television project. Feel free to connect with me at ichen.film@.
