Roger Evan Larry is a director, writer, producer of film TV and new media.
Roger’s most recent feature films are the documentary Citizen Marc and the drama Crossing. Citizen Marc, a feature documentary about the Canadian marijuana activist, Marc Emery, who served five years in a U.S. penitentiary, had its premier at the Montreal World Film Festival in 2013 and has been acquired by The Capitol Motion Picture Group; The Georgia Straight called CITIZEN MARC "Excellent", The Montreal Gazette called it "Highly entertaining …witty and deftly directed" and the Globe and Mail called it "Vexingly fascinating", it has opened in 13 cities across Canada making it the widest domestic release for Canadian documentary in 2014. Citizen Marc was financed by Rogers, Telefilm, Superchannel and The Canadian Media Fund. Crossing, a thriller about a cross-dressing gangster, played in Canadian theatres in 2007 and was nominated for 6 Leo Awards, including Best Picture and Best Directing. It was financed by CHUM/CITY and TELEFILM. It was acquired by Cinemavault and has since sold in over twenty countries.
In the process of filming Citizen Marc, Roger designed an accompanying online environment called The Disagreement Machine; here fans of the film can reedit portions of the film Citizen Marc to author new political narratives by drawing on non-linear video and sound elements in an engaging and innovative experience. Other new media work Roger has done include the sponsored web series Donovan Life which created a one-camera sitcom show to promote a condo that was being marketed. This went viral and received press in papers such as The Chicago Tribune where it made the front page of the Business section and the German Financial Times. He was also the creative lead on MSN CANADA’s flagship program Splice, an animated retelling of Canadian history through the eyes of Marshal McLuhan.
In addition to new media and feature films, Roger has worked extensively in television. His early TV work includes videos for The Tragically Hip, The Bare Naked Ladies and Maestro Fresh Wes and the co-creation of The Gemini-winning YTV show Streetnoise; which was picked up by the BBC. He also did a stint on CITY’s long running The New Music. He was nominated for a Gemini in 2011 for his work as showrunner/series producer on the inaugural season of the scripted documentary series X-Weighted Families, which consists of 13 one-hour episodes, it sold in sixty countries and ran for three seasons.
More recently three of the short films Roger made together with internationally acclaimed visual artist, Mark Lewis, were screened in 2013 at the New York Museum of Modern Art’s satellite gallery, PS1. He has a number of feature films in various stages of development including a comedy The Dadolescents and the period drama Unity 1918, based on the Governor General Award winning play.
