SYNOPSIS:

Title: SWORD IN THE TREE limited series TV Genre: historical fiction / drama Logline: In 1190, a Hospitaller Knight must use a forbidden Christian text to save the pagan people, and pagan woman, he’s come to love. Comp: Vikings meets Tudors World: The three main orders of knights, Templar, Hospitaller, and Teutonic (German) struggle for influence over Popes, Lords, the German Emperor, Kings and Queens . Theme: Earth-based pagan spirituality vs Christian patriarchal hierarchy Hero: Mikhail is gifted with languages, which catapults him into positions of power. His mystical experiences as a boy, and the powers of miracle healing granted by a hidden Christian text, must remain dormant, until he meets the witch, Isla, and he just can’t stand it anymore: the vicious Teutonic Northern Crusades against all ‘pagans’ must be stopped! Villain: Orvello. As boys, Mikhail and Orvello train in the Hospitaller Order. As young men, they perform well at the Siege at Acre, and are given reign over a busy port. Orvello deeply loves Mikhail, but when Mikhail finally denies him, Orvello swears eternal jealous vengeance. Orvello joins the Templar Order, where he orchestrates politics in ways that always force Mikhail to deny his Hospitaller Christian vows. Secondary Villain: The Holy Roman German Emperor. Mikhail spends much of the first season accompanying the English King, Richard the Lionheart, as he's held hostage by the German Emperor after the failed Second Crusade to liberate Jerusalem. After, when the Emperor sends his Teutonics hords north, Mikhail, the Pope's man, tries to bring a Jesus into this otherwise blood-thirsty massacre. Secret Villain: The Pope. Near the end of the first season, when Mikhail makes it back to Rome and appeals to the Pope desperately, that this secret text will change Christianity forever, the Pope lets Mikhail retrieve it, but then stabs our hero in the back. Will anyone ever read these revolutionary words of Jesus? Can we all gain the powers of miracle healing this text gave to Mikhail?

Mazin Zimakowski

Sounds like a pretty nice idea! Crusades are always attractive and northern crusades are still a complete terra incognita for moviemakers ;) Your connection with christianity, hidden secrets and I guess probable "Dances with wolves" type of a twist are interesting as well ;) Would love to read that when You'll have the whole thing ready :)

Mark LaFever

Another cool idea! I second many of Mazin's comments above - this reminds me a little bit of "Valhalla Rising," but with an actual female character in the mix (which "Valhalla" didn't have at all).

It really does explore unknown territory. Something that's really hard to do in fiction!
