I am still based in Texas and Louisiana, but am presently in the Los Angeles area for at least the next couple of months on some personal, non-film related business. And while I cannot take any full time jobs, if anyone needs an extra op or temporary replacement, I am available to day play either as Steadicam or regular operator. I just wanted to let you know about a new venture I started earlier this year. I am now providing the service of aerial cinematography through the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), more widely known as "drones". I based my decision to go into this area on several things. One, I have always had a love of aviation. I even got my private pilot's license while still in high school. While I had originally planned on a career in aviation, my life ended up going in a different direction as you are no doubt aware. When I started seeing what was happening in our industry with the advent of this new technology of drones, stabilized gimbals and smaller, lighter and more capable cameras, my interest was piqued. However, I never would have gone into it had I not met a guy who is an expert UAV pilot. It is one thing to fly a plane while you are sitting in it, but quite another to fly it, and fly it expertly, when you are sitting on the ground! I met Joel McDonald several years ago in unrelated activites and we stayed friends mainly through FaceBook ever since. Joel started out flying RC planes when he was a kid and when he grew up he decided to see if he could put his love of RC planes and skill at flying them to a more profitable activity. He applied for and got hired to fly unarlmed civilian surveillance drones for the US military and served 18 months in Afghanistan flying them. I followed his activities through FaceBook the whole time. (no details of course!) When he returned to the US he took some time to just travel around the country and towards the end of his travels he stopped by the set of a movie I was working on. We got to talking after and I asked him if he'd like to go into this field with me. He jumped at the chance! So as they say, the rest is history! We are now fully operational and are about to take delivery of our second heavy lift aircraft. By heavy lift, I mean it has the capability to lift a Red Epic with a prime lens. Joel flies them and I operate the camera. I have never been a fan of operating cameras with joy sticks, so I invested in a very high quality set of control wheels like those used on remote heads on cranes, but these are specifically made to work with the remote control system of our stabilized gimbals. Anyway, if you or anyone you know has a need for this kind of service, I hope you will keep us in mind. I also still do regular camera and Steadicam operating as well. I'd like to announce the founding of me new venture, Steaditex Camera Systems, LLC. We will primarily be involved in providing aerial cinematography through the use of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) otherwise known as "drones". We just took delivery of our first UAS and started flight testing yesterday. We expect to be fully operational within a couple of weeks.
