Growing up, all i wanted to do was tell stories. Whether it was writing, drawing, acting and as i got older through video or film. I'm currently moving towards that dream of doing it for a living. Actually I'm already doing it as living. But my goal is to shoot a feature film. And then shoot another. and continue on from there. I shoot documentaries, music videos, promos, short films etc... I hope to interact and build relationships with many of you on here. And hopefully even work with some of you. Take Care! Michael
Hi Michael! Wishing you much success - crossing fingers that right feature film comes through to film :)
Thanks for the love guys!
Welcome Michael

Expand commentHey Michael, nice to hear back from you! I just think it would be great to do a series of short docs about some of the early founders. I've seen some stuff done on DJ Kool Herc but never on Afrika Bambaataa or Fabel. To me Bambaataa was the SOUL of the movement. Beyond his legendary electro funk hits he got kids to commit to "battling" creatively on the dance floor instead of violently. His story is fascinating - South Bronx kid and former gang warlord wins writing contest travels to Africa and becomes inspired by the ZULU philosophy! How is it possible that there hasn't already been a movie or documentary about him?! Before I visited NYC in the summer of 2013, I attempted to contact both of them, but hit a brick wall with their reps. They only seemed interested in dealing with major media players - probably because they've been asked to do a lot of stuff for free over the years. I think the trick is to find a direct line to each of them, instead of their reps. I was pressed for time, since I was in NYC for an event, but living there I'm sure you'd have better luck, if you persist. I love Fabel because he's such an old soul - to listen to him talk is to fall in love with his spirit. I think he's the better person to try and reach first, since he was in Rock Steady and Zulu - so he knows Bambaataa. I also love the idea of just using their names, or nicknames, for the title - "AFRIKA" and "FABEL" - since they are such powerful words to begin with, and both are legendary figures of early Hip Hop. - When the movement was about bringing people together in a positive way...and not what it has sadly devolved to today. Although, like we kids used to say back in the day real "hip hop don't stop!" - And its original spirit is still alive and well in the underground movement. (On college radio stations, and on WE FUNK RADIO, to name just a few spaces and places where it resides.) SAD UPDATE - While attempting to reach Bambaataa, I came across an article that suggested the reason he has been so reclusive and publicity-shy was because he's gay and in the closet. If true, I find that tragic. (The new film MOONLIGHT covers the topic of growing up in a machismo urban environment and having to "front" to survive. I was so moved by it that I wrote a LinkedIn article on the subject. - So I am not judging him for his choice.) That being said, I decided to glance at the Wikipedia page on Bambaataa just now, to see if anyone had finally broken through and produced a film or doc on him, and that's when I realized there's been am unfortunate update. It seems that in April of this year he was accused of sexual misconduct against minors, prompting him to be removed as the head of the Zulu Nation. Wow! That's very sad to hear but it might be all the more reason to try and reach him to tell the totality of his story, in his own words - balancing the undeniable good he did with the story of his accusers. Just a thought. My head is still spinning from learning that, and it's important to remember that we have the presumption of innocence in this country, since as of yet he has not been proven guilty of anything. Anyway, I don't like leaving things on a down beat, so I wanted to share the name of a really good but largely unknown documentary that I think you'd dig, in case you haven't already seen it. It's called "From Mambo to Hip Hop" - it's available at Amazon. I shared it with my brother recently, and he loved it. Of course, there was also Baz Luhrmann's "The Get Down" series that aired on Netflix last summer. It's a little corny at times, not quite as edgy as things were, but the music is GREAT and it does tell the story of early Hip Hop, to an extent. :) Entonces... Good luck, keep me posted, and just email me directly if you have any more questions! So I'm sure you're already aware of it, but I shared what I found in case you'd like to hear it from the old school Hip Hop community itself.

He also seems to be involved in a few documentaries. I'm so happy to hear this, especially after learning about Bambaataa's situation.
