About Thomas

Thomas J. Stief, musician, composer and educator, received his training at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich, Germany and the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS. He and his wife Barbara have performed concert tours as soloists and chamber musicians and have worked as music instructors for international schools in many different parts of the world.

Currently Thomas J. Stief lives and works, together with his wife, in Yangon/Myanmar.

"Growing up in Germany with the European orchestral tradition as the backbone of my musical and cultural education, the symphony orchestra became the ideal of instrumental expression. With that came study of the music of the great European classics, but also of H. Villa Lobos, C. Debussy and the Romantics. "Path of a Sunray" was written four years ago as the first of three orchestra works that form the "Caribbean Trilogy". "Wind Spirit" and "Song of the Ocean" were written within the following two years, while we were still living in Curacao, Netherlands Antilles.
All three works are inspired by the nature, people, music and culture in different parts of the world that we were fortunate enough to experience and explore during our extensive travels while working abroad. "Path of a Sunray" is the impressionistic synthesis of many sun images - in the tropical and lush Sri Lankan rain forest, on dry and hot days in the North African desert and from views of tropical oceans and water falls sparkling with sun rays. Another driving force in creating "Path of a Sunray" was my exposure to and interest in, Eastern and Western philosophy and religion from a very young age - how different cultures view the process of spiritual growth, healing and catharsis; different ideas and common human experiences.
- Creating "Path of a Sunray" has been an important part of my own physical and spiritual journey -My music is written to convey beauty and speak to people without requiring explanation, at whatever level of appreciation and perception - yet to convey meaning and message".

Unique traits: I am inspired by travel, people and cultures. Currently I live and work in Yangon/Myanmar.
