SWEET MELODY
By Kimberly Shumate

GENRE: Romance, Music
LOGLINE:

A famous music mogul tired of a generic industry, retreats to the countryside for R&R only to discover a gospel singer he convinces to trade in her simple yet meaningful life for fame.

SYNOPSIS:

High profile music producer WESLEY (30) is famous for turning everyone he signs into a multi-platinum artist whether their talent deserves it or not. But in the studio, his latest pop princess makes outlandish demands, and he realizes he’s created a monster. He snaps, and schedules a trip out of town for a nice, long rest.

Driving through the tranquil countryside, Wesley enjoys the peace and solitude. As evening falls, he pulls into a quaint little Inn. Relaxing on the patio with a glass of wine, listening to the song of night crickets, Wesley hears a heavenly sound. He gazes out over the sleepy streets to find a light streaming from a small church on the edge of town.

Wesley makes his way to the chapel where a young woman, MELODY (25), sings Amazing Grace soulfully. Unnoticed, he quietly sits down, closes his eyes, and appreciates what true talent sounds like.

When finished and with tears in her eyes, Melody is startled to find Wesley there. She slips out of the sanctuary before he realizes it. The next day, he searches for her and learns that she lives in a neighboring town with her grandmother who is battling dementia. Wesley finds Melody and invites her to dinner. Though reluctant to join the handsome “stalker,” her curiosity wins out and she agrees.

At dinner, Wesley schmoozes her in his typical egocentric way, telling her he can make her an overnight sensation. But she is unimpressed and has no interest. Wesley is stunned. “If not stardom, how about breakfast?!” He’s not going to take “no” for an answer.

Their friendship grows as Melody teaches Wesley the real foundation of happiness: Faith. Faith in life, in hope, in unconditional, sacrificial love. He even begins to help her care for her grandma, and also to mentor her church choir students along with her crazy BFF sidekick. Little by little, Wesley’s high-powered persona melts away. Still, he longs to share her talent with the world.

In turn, Melody has finally found a man who has faith in her and in God. Their love for each other is realized when she is willing to sacrifice her happiness to become what he dreams for her to be—a star.

Melody tearfully leaves her grandma and students in the care of her friend. She and Wesley leave for the big city where she is immediately swept away in the limelight. In the process of making her a household name, Wesley loses Melody to celebrity—her time spent with him growing less and less. As her happiness and sparkle fades, Wesley acknowledges that she was right all along. She was better off where he found her.

When her grandmother takes a turn for the worse, the two return to Melody’s small town in time to say goodbye. With a gut-check of what’s really important, they stay to build a richer life within the simple yet abundant little town filled with love, laughter, and music.
