About Alan

Born in Liverpool Alan started his career over 30 years ago at Liverpool Playhouse before becoming a member of the National Youth Theatre appearing in their wonderful award winning production Zigger Zagger. From here he went on to drama school at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and on graduation began forging a career in rep at The Victoria Theatre, Stoke-on-Trent, The Actors’ Company, Nottingham Playhouse, Cambridge Theatre, Theater Clwyd, The Traverse, Edinburgh, The Nuffield Theatre, Southampton amongst many more. In 1979 Alan joined the Royal Shakespeare Company and appeared with Ben Kingsley and Judy Dench in Cymbeline as well as playing Cassio in Othello. Later that year he took part in the legendary RSC production of Nicholas Nickleby which, after a long run in the West End, took him to Broadway, Los Angeles and a television production for Channel Four. Other West End appearances include Journey’s End and the Petula Clarke musical Someone Like You! In 1982 he founded his own fringe venue in London and later in the 80’s won a coveted Fringe First at the Edinburgh International Festival 1989. After a period lecturing in further/higher education Alan became the first Regional Programme Manager for the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain in the West Midlands – their first ever regional base since its’ inception over 52 years ago. A particular highlight of his career was spending every week over a two year period reading to the Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman! He has also made numerous appearances in television and his voice has often been heard on radio and voice-overs.
