About David

David Davila is a South Texas playwright, composer, director, performer and chile con queso enthusiast. His full length plays include ANIMAL HUSBANDRY, ABUELAS OR THE POVERTY CYCLE, MEN OF GOD, ADAN Y JULIO, AZTEC PIRATES & THE INSIGNIFICANCE OF LIFE ON MARS, CREDO, and RECUERDOS OF MY LIFE.

As a composer Davila has written over a hundred songs. In 2012 he completed a massive song-writing project called #52 Songs where he wrote one song a week for an entire year and blogged about the journey which led to four sold-out concerts at the Laurie Beechman Theatre, the Triad, the Underground, and The West End Lounge.

His latest musical MANUEL VERSUS THE STATUE OF LIBERTY with Noemi de la Puente debuted at the 2015 New York Musical Theatre Festival as an official Next Link Selection after winning the 2014 Developmental Reading Series. The extended, sold-out run was nominated for Best Musical, and won several awards including the Social Relevance and Impact award. Davila and de la Puente’s song “Contender” also won a Mikey Award for the most likely to become an audition standard. The show has been further developed at Princeton University.

Other musicals include PYRAMID with Ed Levy (Lincoln Center “Across a Crowded Room” series 2015), VOX POP with Noemi de la Puente (Developmental 4×15 workshop at Musical Theatre Factory 2015 and a concert presentation at 54 Below in 2014), FUCKING BEAUTIFUL with composer Sean Havrilla, NASH POTATOES & DAVEY with Steph Nash (West End Lounge, Hourglass Tavern), CORNER GIRL: THE MUSICAL with Tara Fike (Concert version presented at the Josephine Theatre), and OCCUPY: THE MUSICAL with nine other collaborators (Developmental Reading at Primary Stages 2013). His song cycle TALES FROM HIGHWAY 281 was presented at Intar Theatre’s Roots & New Music festival in November 2012.

He has performed leading roles in theaters all over Texas and New York City and currently performs with Essential Voices USA and the NY Pops at Carnegie Hall. He is the founder of Lone Star Theatre Co, dedicated to promoting the theatrical talents of Texans living in NYC, and managing editor of , the voice of Bohemia. He studied opera theatre at the University of North Texas, arts administration at the University of Texas San Antonio, playwriting at the Primary Stages Einhorn School of Performing Arts, and comedy at Second City Chicago.
