Just curious - how the rest of you's are getting projects financed, what your journey is like and if you just quit working towards funded projects and ask others to do their work for free?

Recently I wrote a classic horror short titled, Beautiful Scary Moon, which we hope to shoot this summer. I already see this as a feature, but my strength is short story writing. I would love to collaborate with a female writer to complete the screenplay for 2 reasons: I respect females (I have a wife and 2 daughters, one of which is a novel writer), and the hero of this story is a female. If you have any direction or interest let me know!
Hey Earl! Nice to meet you. I love the fact that you deal with faith based and horror... I wrote a feature screenplay that is essentially a combination of the two and deals with the occult as well. Would love to bounce stuff and read your work too.

Sounds like you have a lot of skills which isn't all bad. It's good to know a little about a lot. I feel the same way, but I certainly know where I need help. I'd be happy to give constructive direction if I'm able. I'll keep you in mind too.

I am a former TV editor who decided last year to quit his job to become a professional screenwriter. Since then I have written one 8-part-TV Miniseries (mystery/thriller) and three long feature films (respectively comedy, adventure and crime). On top of these I have also penned a few shorts (one of these, a black comedy about a group of Satanists going through an existential crisis during a human sacrifice called THE DEVIL YOU KNEW, was quarter finalist at 2017 Shore Scripts' screenwriting contest).

Luxury loft apartments have taken residence where sewing machines once hummed. I am apprenticing with the last factory standing. Working on a film called the Needle Trade, interesting enough the streets where the garment industry once worked is now where the drug trade lurks. Both Needle based industry, but of a different day. Note: I have no clue what I am doing, but those that remain of the original Needle Trade are dying if not already dead and not to know their stories would be a tragedy. My hope is that with this film I can use the funds to create a Fashion Innovation Hub that is community owned and run, by the next wave of garment makers. Stimulating a rebirth of industry through digital fashion entrepreneurship. *** Any tips, insights for the passionate dressmaker turned Filmmaker are welcome :)
Michael thank you for the suggestion, Shon and I have just connected!
Nice to meet you Stacy
What an inspirational bio. Much success to you, Stacy!
Thank you Laurie :) everyone is so nice and encouraging on this platform...cannot wait to share the journey of the Needle Trade Film with the world.
Nice to meet you.

Hope the discussion title doesn't sound snobby... in short... I'm an Actor/Writer/Director/Producer (Just like everyone else here, LOL) But have spent some dead time running with the wrong crowd in my past... folks who just didn't seem motivated to START and if they did, didn't FINISH. I can't think of 2 things more important in this business. Here's the link to my new film I wrote/directed/ and act opposite 2017 Emmy winner - Kim Estes. (I'm the big cry baby at the end of the trailer) www.iniquitythemovie.com I'm hoping to chat with folks from all sides of the camera... I would love to meet anyone in a similar boat as me... I'm a corporate sales guy with a career already... but use it to finance/catapult everything I'm trying to do in the FILM world. (It's like living 2 lives at the same time... and it's killing us... I mean me.) CHEERS!!
nice to meet another "go-getter" Joey... if you need to work (as an actor) then sometimes you need to make your own work! If you ever want to chat scripts or just shoot the shit re: The Biz the door is always open :)
Thanks Kristof! I appreciate the contact and am also an open door! Thank you and very best in all your pursuits!
Welcome to Stage 32!
Howdy there, Joey! The trailer was awesome -- I love your visual approach to the phone conversation!

We have a website: www.iniquitythemovie.com The goal is for the short film to support the PUSH, PRODUCTION, SALE of the feature length screenplay of the same name. I'D LOVE TO GET YOUR FEEDBACK/THOUGHTS on the TRAILER, WEBSITE, CONCEPT, LOGLINE or anything else you have to offer. I am currently unrepresented in any capacity as a writer/director/actor. I have uploaded the trailer to my Stage 32 profile page as well. I'm looking for like minded folks who are tired of floating in the current and want to make a deliberate swim toward completing projects and making a living in this craft. Pleasure to meet you ALL.

The business side of show. Honestly, when I had an investor, it was extremely taxing. However, self-financing is essentially chasing money as well
So right Hamish. And can lead to a ton of debt if you’re not careful!
Did you save a patch for the memory?

Interesting discussion. There is a webinar recently advertised on here on how to fund making a documentary, this might be a template for making a feature as well.

Expand commentHi Cherelynn. Do I get tired of chasing money for projects? Hmm. So not only did I decide that I was going to create a television show and raise the financing myself, I also decided that I want to be a studio. Am I tired? I passed tired about a month into this adventure. Working in financial services, I believe I know how to put a deal together. It is about your network. You need to know someone who can introduce you to the person(s) who can write the check. You need to have a solid understanding of what terms you're looking for and understand what you're willing to sacrifice to get a deal done. I firmly believe it's better to pay people. It's better to have union people. I shot the first episode myself on an iPhone. It was rough looking to say the least. The fifth episode, I had small crew (not union) and everyone got paid. Now, cast and crew will be union for the rest of the season but it will take millions of dollars to shoot. I am excited about the talent level we are attracting. No major stars, but talented actors along with experienced, award winning crew members. The production quality is like night and day. Keep fighting for the money.
