For almost 100 years, both the Russian government and the Orthodox Church were at odds over the fate of the last two members of the Tsar's family; supposedly killed with the rest of the family in 1918. The Protectors gives a plausible alternate history that explains how a group of Tsarist loyalists saved the last two Romanovs, and their royal descendants, in preparation for a restoration of the dynasty in the last crumbling years of the Putin regime.
