Getting ready for an 11th and final fundraiser, Lifting to Lend A Hand, which is like a walkathon but designed to help out best practice mentoring programs in disadvantaged communities. Dear Stage 32 friends, Hope you will consider supporting this last, final effort. I have set a big, hairy audacious goal of a raise this time around. I have made a large personal commitment to the raise. Dan When I first lifted in 2003, I raised $2,600. I steadily increased my annual fundraising amounts with your support and that of others like you, so that by 2012, I had raised a total of $250,000. This year marks the 11th and final year of my efforts to provide resources to local one-on-one mentoring programs for children. As I ascend to the platform of the Chicago Bar Association (CBA) presidency, I will step on the Lifting platform one last time. My Lifting to Lend-A-Hand XI goal is to raise $100,000. Your donation can help me to get there. Every penny that I raise will go to the Sun-Times Judge Marovitz Lawyers Lend-A-Hand to Youth, which promotes best practice mentoring programs in disadvantaged communities. Since its founding in 1995 by former CBA President Thomas A. Demetrio, Lawyers Lend-A-Hand to Youth has awarded over $1.5 million in grants and positively affected the lives of tens of thousands of youth. Raising $100,000 will cover one full year of grants to mentoring programs. Programs that transforming the lives of youth across the city. I first publicly announced my goal at the Lawyers Lend-A-Hand to Youth Spring Awards Dinner on April 30. At the dinner, George, a young man mentored through the Urban Life Skills Program of New Life Centers, spoke of how before joining the program he cared little for anyone else. He literally described himself as a “psychopath.” After working with his mentor, he has become a whole new person that “wants to give back.” With a donation from you, think about how many more young people like George can be guided towards a different path in life. How does this all work? Lifting to Lend-A-Hand is like a walkathon event. On July 19, I will compete in a powerlifting meet. The best lift in each of the squat, the bench, and the deadlift will go towards my total “Lift.” You can make a specific pledge, or you can pledge by the pound. Specific pledges can be fulfilled anytime by donating online or by sending in a check with the attacheddonation form. I expect to lift between 1400 and 1500 pounds total. If you pledge $.10 per pound, and I lift 1500 pounds, you would owe $150. I will notify everyone of the results of my July 19 lifting the following week. The biggest donors will be recognizedon a t-shirt that I will wear at the meet(the pledge deadline for inclusion on the t-shirt is June 30) and will be recognized at the My Hero Awards reception the third week of September, for which they will receive free tickets. The donor recognition levels are: - Platinum Ton Group - $5,000 or $3.33 per pound – 8 tickets · Gold Ton Group - $2,500 or $1.67 per pound – 4 tickets · Silver Ton Group - $1,000 or $.67 per pound – 2 tickets · Bronze Ton Group - $500 or $.33 per pound – 1 ticket Here are some important dates to keep in mind: · Sunday, June 1 (50 days prior to Lifting competition) – I will share a progress of my training to date. · Thursday, June 26 (The CBA Annual Luncheon) – I will be installed that day as the 138th President of the CBA and make a membership-wide appeal to support Lifting to Lend-A-Hand. · Monday, June 30 – Deadline for pledges/donations for recognition on event t-shirt. · Saturday, July 19 – I will compete at American Drug-Free Powerlifting Federation (ADFPF) Full Power Nationals in Quincy Illinois,http://www.adfpf.org/index.php?page=events. · Thursday, July 31 – Deadline to make Lifting donations/fulfill pledges. · Third Week of September (My Hero Awards Event - date TBD) – The Lifting to Lend-A-Hand XI fundraising total will be announced and lead contributors and ambassadors (for more information on becoming an Lifting ambassador, please contact me) will be recognized.
