About Jay

The recipient of a BA in political science from Michigan State University and JD from DePaul University College of Law, Jay Paul Deratany gained admission to the Illinois Bar in 1987. By 1993, Jay Paul Deratany was licensed to practice in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and the Supreme Court of both Illinois and Florida.

A member of the Chicago Bar Association, he has served as a partner and lead trial attorney at The Deratany Firm since 1993. Considered one of the United States’ top trial firms, it focuses primarily on medical malpractice as well as adoption and foster care negligence. Mr. Deratany’s accomplishments with the firm include winning a $20 million settlement against a foster care agency for its placement of a child in the home of an abuser and an $8.7 million verdict against a Pennsylvania-based foster care division. Over the course of his career, he has won his clients a combined total of over $100 million.

Recognized as a Leading Lawyer of Chicago since 2012, Mr. Deratany has also received the Million Dollar Advocates Award, ATLA Leaders Forum Award, and the Ekroth Award for providing exceptional legal services in the representation of individuals with disabilities. In addition to his legal career, he is a passionate writer and producer who earned his MA in screenwriting from the University of California, Riverside.
