A young police officer responds to a strange call at a remote diner off the highway, where children claim a monster stole their voices. Thinking it's a prank, he heads to the mysterious field to investigate.
SYNOPSIS:
On a summer evening, a group of bloodied and terrified teenagers bursts into a diner along a deserted highway. Unable to speak, they frantically use gestures and notes to explain that a monster in the field stole their voices. The diner owner calls the police, and young officer Quentin arrives on the scene. Though skeptical and believing it to be a prank, Quentin decides to investigate the children's story and heads to the mysterious field with them.
At the field, Quentin encounters Vaaton, an alien studying human communication who is awaiting evacuation. Vaaton warns that he will kill anyone who approaches his spaceship again. When Quentin attempts to show courage and confront the alien, Vaaton takes his voice and kills one of the teenagers.
In desperation, Quentin agrees to a deal with Vaaton: the alien will revive the dead teenager in exchange for Quentin's left arm. After a bright white flash, the teenager springs back to life and runs away. Quentin looks at his shoulder, where his left arm has vanished.
Overwhelmed by fear, Quentin rushes back to the police station, where he reports the incident. Multiple police cars head to the field, but Quentin, paralyzed by fear, cannot lead his colleagues. He flees when he hears the alien weapon's blasts, running along the highway with tears streaming down his face, driven by terror.
Quentin realizes his transformation from an altruist to an egoist, failing to complete his duty. The future remains uncertain: will Quentin continue to fight for salvation, or will he remain a prisoner of his fear forever?
