PC Holly Ryan fights to claw back her career by facing off against a serial killer in a deadly
game of chess.
SYNOPSIS:
Chess is an elegantly intricate game of strategy, but when each piece represents the life of an
innocent person, whose fate rests on a timely capture, a bold move, or a quick castle, it
becomes more than just a battle of wits. This is the challenge facing Police Constable Holly
Ryan as she faces off against Elvis, a chess prodigy-turned-psychopath.
Holly is first introduced as ambitious, but reckless, as she is banished from the Met for
alleged misconduct following a botched arrest. Exile in a small Cornish constabulary under
an embittered Chief Inspector, Duncan McClair, soon takes its toll. Depressed, Holly posts a
drunken tweet criticising those who she believes wronged her. An anonymous comment
insists something must be done.
Back in London, PCSO Arjun Rai’s ambitions of joining the Met are driving a wedge
between him and his wife, Amirah, and neither is helping the wedge shrink.
Two months on and resigned to her mediocrity, Holly’s snapped back into action when a
young woman, Hannah Bailey, drops dead in the police station, a pawn lodged in her throat.
Chaos abounds when the case is linked to the disappearance of eight school children, and a
famous actor. This is Holly’s way back to the big time, much to McClair’s chagrin.
Matters are exacerbated by the arrival of Holly’s insufferable old foe, DC Jordan Rose, whom
she blames for her banishment. Jordan brings news of another murdered woman who was
choked to death using the rules to chess. The connection not only indicates a pattern to the
killings, but also that the killer is enjoying himself, especially as Holly’s name is inscribed on
the murder weapon.
Arjun suspects Amirah of infidelity, but he’s advised by a helpful stranger to reconcile with
her, else he’ll lose what makes him truly happy. Trouble is Amirah’s vanished. The stranger,
it turns out, was Elvis.
Unfazed by Jordan’s concerns that she’s being targeted, Holly resolves to crack the case
alone to prove she belongs in London. The pilot ends with Holly, consumed by the prospect
of redemption, being blindsided by the sight of Arjun in her house, trapped in a suicide vest.
