About Terry

Terry Lee Barrett, Screenwriter, Terry Lee Barrett is marketing his screenplays worldwide. Barrett has always been an entertainment pioneer.

While in college at Philadelphia’s Temple University, where
he majored in History and Political Science, Barrett’s on-air entertainment debut began when he was hired as the youngest host on the all-talk-radio formatted WHAT-AM Radio program in 1978. It was there he produced and hosted the show entitled, “Express Yourself to Terry Lee Barrett.”

Soon after, his career in radio blossomed when he produced a Black History commercial series for First Pennsylvania Bank in 1979 entitled, “The Infinite Hourglass,” which was nominated for the CEBA award, a national honor for excellence in advertising. The achievement made Barrett’s competitors aware of him at nearby WDAS-AM/FM Radio in Philadelphia, where he worked from 1980 to 1987 as a news reporter and producer of the legendary, “Georgie Woods Talk Show.”

During the same time, in 1985, Barrett began his interest in video production and started his “Video to Go” company, which created the “Video Hawk” Cable Show. The video entertainment talk show he hosted highlighted an array of artists from Janet Jackson to the Third World Reggae Band.

Barrett later produced the highly acclaimed documentary on blues legend Bessie Smith sponsored by The Philadelphia Blues Alliance. Music was always Barrett’s real love. He continued his rise in the music scene by hosting the top-rated Caribbean/World Music Show on WRTI 90.1 FM, from 1987 to 1995.

Fans of the show were two Philadelphia building developers. They invited Barrett to an abandoned pier on the Philadelphia waterfront and asked one question: If they built a Caribbean-style club at this location, would the idea be successful? “If you build it, they will come,” Barrett responded, and the legendary “Katmandu” Restaurant, Nightclub, and Marina was born. Barrett was named the house Disc Jockey and Music Director for the next 12 years at the world-renowned, world music hot spot. Following that overwhelming success, a second Katmandu opened in New Jersey where Barrett also deejayed.

Through it all, Barrett realized the potential of young artists in Philadelphia and their need for guidance in the entertainment business, leading him to become the founder of the Philadelphia Foundation For World Music and Arts (PFWMA) in 1998, for which he remains president.

Along with the many events the foundation has produced, it has consistently raised money
and sent books, clothing, and hospital equipment to Jamaica. The foundation also screened two internationally acclaimed movies, “Life and Debt” and “Africa United” and awarded Toots and the Maytals with the City of Philadelphia Proclamation.

Barrett has said his Caribbean adventure epic entitled, “Kata The Iron Thorn” was written in honor of his late father; the world-renowned anthropologist, Dr. Leonard E. Barrett, Sr. Please visit the Kata The Iron Thorn website at

"Kata The Iron Thorn," is a Supernatural, Superhero, and Family Fantasy Movie with a non-violence theme. Though it is set in Present Day, it flashes back to a legendary story that takes place during The Age of Piracy to dramatically reflect on the persistent issues of violence, greed, ignorance, and prejudice. The Kata story uniquely reflects on these pressing issues with wit and humor. The Kata story is a Romantic Fantasy at its core!

The story takes place in the 21st century but flashes back to the legend of Kata, the Supernatural Jamaican Warrior that battled Pirates and Ghosts (Duppies) in 1655, Jamaica. The story has a crucial Philadelphia tie-in and is suitable for all ages!
