THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE LAST ROYALS
By Amita Sarin

GENRE: Historical
LOGLINE:

What is a former Princess and now Member of Parliament doing in a New Delhi prison and what is Prime Minister Indira Gandhi going to do to her?

SYNOPSIS:

The pursuit of freedom and self-determination are human universals and form the major theme of this limited drama series set in the 20th century, when British-ruled India co-existed with over 500 kingdoms. India’s

struggle for liberty from colonialism mirrors that of Indian women, who want autonomy and freedom from misogynistic paternalism and repressive traditions. Even after Independence in 1947, the fight continues for freedom to choose one’s own spouse and the right to elect one’s leaders. Ironically, in 1975, India’s hard-won freedom is taken away by one of their own. We see the impact of the Gandhi-led campaigns, WWII, and the integration of the Princely States through the experiences of Ayesha – a princess who some believed could be PM someday and her relatives - as their world and power crumbles around them. Based on historical events and characters.
