About Amita

Writer, Storyteller, Researcher
My first screenplay, based on historical events and characters and set in India, Europe and USA, was optioned and was in development for 2 years, but the contract expired due to Covid. I was actively looking to place THE LAST ROYALS which I have written both as a feature and a pilot for a TV series, but last year I learned that a major studio in Mumbai was going to produce a drama series on the same person. I decided not to waste any more energy on this project.

I taught university courses on Indian art and cultural history as an adjunct lecturer, and am available to consult on movies and TV shows about India.

In addition, I taught a course on World Sacred architecture and am now making a documentary THE NATION'S CAPITAL: HOME TO THE WORLD about places of worship in the Washington DC metropolitan area where I live. It is now in post production. I hope to make further films in a series A SACRED PIECE OF HOME.

I have also written a pilot for a TV series - A DIFFERENT WORLD about a widow from New Delhi who comes to live with her married children in the USA and the challenges she faces. It placed as a finalist in the Cinema Street shorts contest.

I am an immigrant from India and have authored two non-fiction children's books on India and am thinking of writing a screen play based on one of them, about Akbar, a Mughal king in 16th century India. Ideas range from an animated series for children based on historical paintings from Akbar's reign.

Toying with the idea of writing a short comedy series about an older couple, both Punjabis from India and their day-to-day repartee as they read the news and grapple with major and minor health issues, prejudices and predispositions. Based on myself and my husband, tentatively titled: VERY CLOSE TO THE TRUTH.
