A UCLA sophomore from India, Sara Gupta, forces a meeting with Brad Walker, a hot but “has been”, white American tennis star, suspecting that he may be her biological father and ends up rescuing him from himself. But why does her older sister Priya vehemently object to this?
SYNOPSIS:
Sara Gupta is a 19-year-old from India, finishing her sophomore year at UCLA. She is reluctant to go back to Delhi for the summer to work for her sister Priya, 37, who runs the family’s industrial empire. Ryan, her classmate of mixed Indian-American heritage, drags her to the college notice board to find a more attractive summer internship. There Sara is shocked to find an ad to help the famous American retired tennis star, Brad Walker, write a memoir.
A flashback to four years ago reveals that Sara and Priya’s parents have died in an accident in Delhi. After the funeral in Delhi, while going through her mother’s photographs and other memorabilia, Sara and her friend Abby come across a birth certificate that reveals that it is Priya who is really Sara’s biological mother. When confronted, Priya does not deny this fact. Although she refuses to reveal identity of the father, she admits to something even more shocking to Sara -that he is an American and . . . white!
Sara, who identifies with being Indian and looks quite brown, is very upset by this reveal and in denial and resentful of her new-found mixed race status. Later, while rummaging through Priya’s closet, Sara finds an India Today magazine from before her birth, with an article about the visit to Delhi of young American tennis star Brad Walker earmarked, causing her to question, is he her father? Sara has no other names for potential fathers.
Back to present day, although previously determined to ignore the existence of her white birth father, Sara’s curiosity is aroused, so she sets out to secure the internship and lands at Brad Walker’s residence. There she meets his mother Barbara, a classic Beverly Hills lady in her late 60s, with cliched thoughts about Indians being poor and having few opportunities, but with a good heart hidden behind a brusque manner.
Brad Walker though, turns out to be a huge disappointment. He is jaded, an alcoholic and a womanizer, stuck in the time warp of his past accomplishments. But a stealthy paternity test proves to Sara that he is indeed her father. Sara sets out to engage with Brad, steering him towards more realistic life goals, and finds out that underneath it all, is someone who appreciates family and is a vulnerable person she quite likes. Although they share some quirky habits and like and dislikes, - they are at the opposite ends of Brad’s huge love – tennis! In short, Sara sucks at it.
When Ryan, who has always been attracted to Sara, asks her out one more time, Sara who has avoided dating altogether, finally gives in and much to her own surprise, enjoys herself on the date, even ends up making out with Ryan!
Unfortunately, Priya shows up in Los Angeles, just ten days into Sara’s internship, and meets Brad. Despite their role reversals, where twenty years ago she had been a carefree teenager and now was a confident, sophisticated, successful business woman, whereas Brad has gone from being a world-famous tennis champion to a bit of a lost soul, sparks fly still between them again, encouraged by Barbara and Sara sees her efforts of establishing a relationship with Brad completely derailing.
At a grand dinner party attended by all the characters, including Brad’s pop star sister Carrie, when suddenly confronted with the fact that Sara is his daughter, Brad violently rejects her and throws Priya and Sara, out of his house, and his life. This was exactly what Priya had been afraid of!
Back in Delhi, Sara is despondent and determined never to go back to America. She seeks to enroll in a local college and also tries to accept her fate of running their family industrial conglomerate. Priya, sad upon seeing this change in her sister/daughter, invites Sara’s friends Abby and Ryan to visit them in Delhi before the end of summer.
As Sara slowly relaxes with her friends, she has another surprise visitor in Delhi – Brad. After coming to terms of his having a daughter that he had not previously known about, Brad decides that he needs to know the whole story. He admits to Sara . . .that he missed her, and manages to convince her of how much he appreciates the person she is, her values and that he wants to establish a relationship with her. Brad also admits his attraction to Priya. Sara grudgingly gives in, and in turn, declares how proud she is of his accomplishments.
We end two years later, with a huge Indian wedding in Delhi between a renaissance Brad and Priya, with Sara’s blessings. And credits roll with a Bollywood musical number!
