A shy sea lioness abandons her love of singing after hearing her talented friends sing. It is not until retirement that she recognizes her impact on her community and bursts into stupendous song, reawakening her true voice.
SYNOPSIS:
On the Pacific Coast near Santa Barbara, a young sea lioness named LU-SEA is born. In the privacy of her own home, she delights in singing. She has a passion for a variety of different musical genres – classical, show tunes, gospel, pop – and she delivers rousing renditions of many of her favorite tunes.
However, once she enters MRS. SOUL’s music class in high school, Lu-sea begins to feel nervous about her singing.
Lu-sea’s friend BUBBLES shows no shame while belting tunes at the piano during her sleepovers.
Lu-sea’s friend SANDY croons soulful ballads in a flawless soprano voice.
JUNE, another close friend of Lu-sea’s, is a tell-it-like-it-is source of support for Lu-sea, Bubbles and Sandy.
Class clowns CROAKER and EDDY entertain them all with their unabashedly goofy musical antics at MR. WITTESTACHE'S summer music camp.
Lu-sea’s incredibly talented classmate MARILU is equally adept at filling a concert hall with soaring sound and getting the other students dancing after MS. MARM’S physical education class.
Watching her peers perform with flair and gusto, Lu-sea only grows more self-conscious. She clams up at Mr. Wittestache’s annual summer performance at Pier 39, worried that her talents cannot compare with those of her friends. It is at this point that Lu-sea gives up everything to do with music.
Lu-sea takes some time to discover that she possesses remarkable talents in other areas. She has considerable athletic prowess, always placing in first. She shows great sense of humor as a volunteer entertainer in front of the SEA VETS and in her school talent show. Last, but not least, Lu-sea had a real knack for babysitting younger sea lions such as STORMY, a hyperactive and dangerously curious little sea lion.
When Lu-sea grows up, she finds her calling as a coach. MRS. GOODHEART, the principal at her former high school with an Eve Arden presence, hires her on. Lu-sea begins teaching volleyball, swimming and soccer at her high school alma mater. Though Lu-sea is gifted in sports, she recognizes that not everyone is and encourages her student NANETTE DREN (backward for “nerd”) to follow her dream of becoming a photojournalist on sea life. She is beloved by all her STUDENTS, many of whom go on to earn accolades of their own, including FITZ and ZIMMERS, best friends who made it to the Pacific Coast Swim Championship and won medals at the Pacific Coast Olympic Swimming Competition. Another favored student, CUTTER became a swim technique coach and demonstrates his cutting stroke that gave him his name.
After a long and fulfilling career in teaching, Lu-sea retires happily. Lying on the K-docks, she looks back on her accomplishments and is so contented that she begins to sing. The lovely sound carries and other sea lions take notice and join her in song.
With her newfound confidence, Lu-sea decides to perform at an upcoming karaoke event. Word quickly spreads and many of Lu-sea’s friends, former students and some of the sea vets turn up to listen to her sing.
