In the middle of the world's toughest ocean race, a solo yachtsman risks everything to search for his greatest rival's sinking vessel in the iceberg-ridden waters of the Southern Ocean.
SYNOPSIS:
NOTE: this is a work in progress. The below "synopsis" is not so much a synopsis but more of a "brain dump" of ideas. I am working on the outline (which when done I'll be happy to forward onto anyone interested) - the first few pages of the first draft of the screenplay have been written (long may it continue).
Two solo yachtsmen, two bitter rivals in the middle of one of the most demanding and dangerous yacht races on the planet. One the mentor, the other the former student.
When the state of the art yacht of the former student and the race leader, strikes a “growler” (a submerged broken off piece of iceberg), and starts to slowly sink in waters that a human could only survive in for mere moments, they finally give up any hope of repairing the damage and continuing with the race, and send out a distress call. The last person they thought that would come to their rescue would be their biggest rival!
Receiving the distress call, our hero, the former mentor, a hardened ocean sailor, coarse, bitter and an alcoholic, now finding himself in the lead of what will be his swan song race, displays the ultimate in courage and sportsmanship by deciding to turn his yacht around, and in a life or death race against time embarks on a “needle in a haystack” search of the iceberg ridden, rough and dangerous Southern Ocean water for his rival, former student and fellow yachtsman, before his yacht sinks into the icy waters and his student's certain death.
