About Nyembezi

Nyembezi is a writer, director and explorer with a dynamic duo of a heritage from Malawi and South Africa. Dissatisfied with the motivations that grounded her mother in Africa’s ‘City of Gold’, she spent her twenties working around the continent, discovering that home is as elusive a concept as identity. She speaks four indigenous languages and can sort-of understand many others, including Afrikaans, a descendant of Dutch. She also completed an Honours Degree in English Literature while working in Advertising.

Recently, she was one of six African screenwriters selected to develop ‘beyond the binary’ stories for Paramount. She first underwent a competitive filmmaker program through which she wrote and directed a stand-alone episode of an anthology drama now on Amazon Prime. It was the most watched film across local and international platforms in South Africa. Today, she attributes her understanding of the human character to the hyperreality of belonging nowhere and everywhere.
