LOGLINE:

After trusting his fate to a family friend when traveling across the Atlantic to Ellis Island in 1910, a young Italian immigrant learns that the path is not always direct as he navigates the curves along the way.

SYNOPSIS:

After confronting the harsh economic realities of 1910 Italy, 20 year old Modesto Morelli makes the brave decision to seek his fortune in the United States. With his family struggling to maintain their family farm, he feels confident he can find work and send money back home to subsidize his parents Giovanni and Angiolina and 16 year old brother Antonio. As a concerned parent, Giovanni Morelli feels less anxiety when he pays Mr. Cicharelli, an acquaintance from their local city of Parma, to watch over and protect Modesto along the journey. Mr. Cicharelli has assured Giovanni that he can assist in finding construction work for Modesto when they arrive in New York.

Upon arrival at Ellis Island the two men become separated in the chaos of entry and processing through the Immigration officials. Distraught and confused when Mr. Cicharelli seems to disappear, Modesto waits hours hoping to find his travel partner. When all seems hopeless, a savior in the form of Mr. Dalmaso appears and takes Modesto under his wing with a promise to find him a job working on the railroad. Feeling desparate with no other prospects, Modesto goes with Mr. Dalmaso and takes the train with him to unknown Massachusetts.

True to his word, Mr. Dalmaso makes good on his promise and the next day Modesto finds himself working on the railroad as he begins a new adventure and a new life with new found friends. Luigi, Stefano and Mr. Dalmaso become his surrogate family. Modesto feels a renewed sense of hope and purpose as he navigates this unforeseen opportunity in a new country.
