About Alex

Moving deep into the heart of the Rocky Mountains, where polygamy originated, life was
confusing at first. Coming home from my small catholic school to a Muslim father, and an
English mother who was doing her best to fit in, had me questioning my own identity. While
my vegetarian father made rice and dal, my mother was feeding my craving for America,
and its food that was fast. A lack of relating to the kids at school, pushed my discovery of
the kids that fit in nowhere. We skateboarded the streets, wrote our names on the walls,
and sweated in the dark underground clubs where blistering punk music penetrated our
ears. This wild bunch helped me navigate my new surroundings and helped forge my true
identity.

Rushing home from school, the uniform forced upon me was quickly stripped away and
replaced by one that made me feel more like myself. Teen years were spent with eyes
wandering through the pages of my mothers fashion magazines, dreaming up ideas of my
own, hand sewing clothes and adding pins, patches and buttons where they didn't belong.
This was my only outlet for creativity. After high school, I did as any good child of a
Pakistani immigrant would do, I attended business school. Trudging my way through the
halls of collegiate life, where the only time spent on campus was to attend class, my future
was being forged into regret. Punk being a close knit community, the misfits of all realities
converged and related to each other in the same spaces. My friend group expanded to the
club kids of the nineties underground rave scene. When admiring the make shift outfit my
friend created, she told me I could learn to do the same thing at a local junior college.

Then it happened, I discovered the purpose missing from my life. In the final year of my
business degree, I took night classes in fashion design. This is what I truly wanted out of
life, to embrace my creative passion. My professor believing in me was the push I needed.
She convinced me to participate in a student fashion show, where I made all the clothes
from scratch. An idea struck me to change the runway show to a make shift scene on
stage, where the models would break character and walk the runway, all of which I
choreographed. Standing at the end of the runway embraced by applause, I set my sights
on a life outside my town. I finished my degree in business, keeping my parents happy,
then moved away to the big city of Los Angeles. There, I pursued my true dream,
becoming a fashion designer. Soon after, I was at the helm of my own company, giving
the world what I felt was my life's purpose, creating things that helped evoke a sense of joy
and an expression of self. This want to bring joy, continues today, in a new form of creative
expression, writing.
