I've written a novel for children 8-13 called MY LIFE AFLOAT which takes place in and around Chicago.
When twelve-year-old Maeve's parents both lose their jobs within six months, her family must sell, store or give up most of their material possessions to stay afloat financially. Feeling guilty that her figure skating has lead to the family's financial struggles, Maeve quits the one thing in life she's most passionate about. When her mother suggests selling the rundown sailboat left by her grandfather, Maeve urges her parents to reconsider, especially since sailing is Dad's passion. When Mom takes a 3-month job in Kansas City, the family divides: Maeve and Dad move onto the boat for the summer while Mom and Ben move 500 miles away. While Maeve helps Dad repair the boat, she searches for ways to help him land a permanent job in Chicago to bring her family back together. Violent August storms batter and unanchor the only home Maeve has left, leaving her wondering how she'd ever believed a 12-year-old could save her shattered family from sinking...
