About Denny

Denny Y Miller has been in the South African Television Industry for over 25 years. He's an award winning Drama TV Director, Actors' Coach, Directors' Mentor and Voice Over Artist.

He was 19 when he got a break as a Runner on EGOLI - PLACE OF GOLD - the infamous, smash hit daily tele-serial that aired in the 1990’s. He couldn’t have found himself in a better arena.
Surrounded by many of the greatest actors and actresses of our time and some of the best technicians the country had to offer in South Africa made for an extraordinary, indelible experience that left him seeped in knowledge and seduced by the industry.

He debuted as a Director on a youth drama series called BACKSTAGE for eTV in 2004.
Eighteen years on, he sports extensive experience in both single-cam and multi-cam production.

He directed the first season of Nigeria’s first ever studio multi-cam drama daily series called TINSEL - with producer Femi Odugbemi - mentoring a cast and crew that had little or no experience in the genre.
He wrote and directed Kenya’s first talent-search reality series called THE PRESENTER.
He was also Creative Director and Director on two seasons of MOMENTS WITH MO - a Nigerian talk show hosted by Mo Abudu.

The South African Film and Television Awards (the SAFTA's) have been generous to him. To date, seven nominations and three wins.
Best Director of a Drama (SWARTWATER) and two times winner of Best Director of a Telenovela (ISIBAYA).
In 2016, SAINTS AND SINNERS - a Sunday night primetime series for DSTV that also starred the incredibly talented Thuso Mbedu - scooped up two awards for Best Actor. The show was also nominated for Best Director, Best Drama and Best Cinematography (Jonothan de la Querra).

eTV’s (turned out to be) very popular UMLILO - a Quizzical Pictures production - also received recognition at the 2016 SAFTAs; including Best Drama, Best Cinematography and Best Production Design.

In 2012, Denny reached the finals in the Mnet TAG Awards’ best Script Category for his first self-written, produced and directed 'GBV TVC' called ‘You Cannot Rape Me’ (see ).

Recently, Denny hosted Masterclasses in Acting and Directing for the Multichoice Talent Factory in several African countries.
Borne from a desire to reinvest in the industry and share some of the things he’s learnt, topics include Script Analysis; Story-Telling Objectivity; ‘Piloting the Set’ and building a trust-relationship with actors.

He's also considered to be able to 'Hold Space' - a term borne out of creating an environment whereby the Actor feels safe to express themselves, which in turn generates truth and honesty in performance that compliments the narrative.

His debut on Netflix - directing a 'camp melodrama' - airs in March 2022.
