About Hakan

HHakan Ünal is a self-taught filmmaker living in the southlands of Turkey. He is interested in repression and reflection of women and men that try to adapt the social environment. He likes to explore loneliness, violence and intimacy.
His atmospheric films defy stereotypical understandings of those who have been excluded from society.
Ünal’s films and screenplays have been selected at multiple festivals internationally. His short scripts THE SHELL and PURGATORIO won Grand Prize for Best International Screenplay at the Rhode Island International Film Festival. His short film ALLEGORIA (2020) premiered at Dhaka International Film Festival and was screened at many international film festivals including 18. Reykjavik IFF, 67. Oberhausen ISFF, 22. Izmir ISFF, 75. Festival Internazionale Del Cinema Di Salerno, 19. Concours de Courts.
He has been selected two times for the Reykjavik Talents. He is currently developing his two feature screenplays entitled HIDDEN and LEYLA.
