About Sheryl

Sheryl S Hill , a member of the Osage Nation, is a professional stand-up comedian (“Mama Bird The Comedian”), grassroots activist, and screenwriter, who resides in Oklahoma.

Born and raised on the Osage Reservation, she comes from the Bighorse and Copperfield, both traditional families as well as a long line of tribal government and grassroots leaders, beginning with her great-great grandfather, Andrew Bighorse, who was one of many of their people who “quietly stormed” the White House lawn on January 12th, 1928, during the “Osage Reign of Terror”, to finally make President Coolidge hear their cries for help that had been previously falling on deaf ears. Thus beginning the birth of the FBI, because of this action.

Sheryl’s own mother, Sherry Gann, began her journalism career with the Osage Nation News, later becoming the top Ad Executive for the Oklahoma Eagle, a Black Newspaper that survived and is still located in the heart of Tulsa’s Black Wall Street, then returning home to the Osage Reservation’s Pawhuska (Pronounced “Paw-Husk-Uh”) District, to become the first Osage woman General Manager and Editor of the city’s 100 year old newspaper, The Journal Capital, before retiring early due to illness.

Sheryl started her own journey in journalism as the first female Sports Editor, and receiving her first byline at the age of fifteen. She has written many articles over the years for both the Oklahoma Eagle and the Journal Capital as a “string reporter”.

While staying with her uncle, Native actor and screenwriter, Larry Sellers, it was there that she was taught the basic fundamentals of screenwriting.

Sheryl decided to pursue her dream of stand up comedy in 2017, while residing in Southern California. From their, she took her comedy to Albuquerque, New Mexico and made an even bigger name for herself when she won her first comedy contest, beating four of the top four comedians of New Mexico, and was one of two female comedians out of the twelve competing comedians. From there she co-hosting a live comedy show called “Cat and Bird’s Hostel Comedy Show” on Saturday mornings, with fellow female comedian Cat Savage, in front of the historic “Mother Road’s Route 66 International Hostel.”

After returning back to Oklahoma in January, 2020, just as the Pandemic was beginning, Sheryl gathered over 36 comedians, musicians, dancers, professional athletes, along with the Congressional leader and now Department of Interior Secretary, Deb Haaland, and Missing Murdered Indigenous Women (US Organization) founder and ED, Deborah Maythubee Shippman, to perform for one historic event totally online and mass streamed on several social media and internet sites, to raise awareness and support for twelve different organizations, called “Help Me Understand: Coming Together To Heal In 2020”.  Still, she missed writing, which she began doing again, also during the first of the 2020 Pandemic.

Sheryl is currently working on a relaunch of her podcast, “Skoolin’ You Rez Style”, as well as a new podcast, “Native Aunties Table Talk”. She is also working with Native actor and executive producer, Ricky Lee Regan (American Indian Film Corporation, New Mexico). Together, Sheryl and Ricky have completed their first script, “The Road Trip, Rez Style.” a Native comedy and period piece, and are currently working on two more.

Unique traits: Smart, funny, short, chubby, balding, and a heck of a writer! Not to mention, a great cook, as well.
