When Rafaela Alfonso, a woman who has spent her whole life in slavery, is granted her freedom, she must confront an odyssey of barriers imposed by her origins in order to become a successful businesswoman in a society dominated by men.
SYNOPSIS:
This is the story of Rafaela Alfonso, a woman born a slave, and Emilio Alfonso, a soldier in the Spanish Army. In 1886, Rafaela and her father gain a letter of freedom from their former master and migrate west from the farm where they lived as slaves. Simultaneously, the male protagonist, Emilio Alfonso, goes to Cuba in 1895 to fight against the independence army. José María, a fellow countryman, rescues him from imprisonment and helps him to begin a new life in Paso Real de San Diego. There, the destination affords Emilio and Rafaela the opportunity to meet and unite their lives. The turning point happens when Rafaela is abused by Emilio and she leaves for the capital with her daughter and a few coins, From slave to street vendor, to owner of The Lily of the Prado, one of the most prosperous restaurants in the country, she becomes a successful businesswoman on par with the most prominent business owners of the time despite her origins, and she undergoes an unexpected love triangle.
