BOARDWALK WINTER

BOARDWALK WINTER
By Jonathan Fox

GENRE: Romance, Comedy
LOGLINE:

After being diagnosed with a terminal illness, an independent young woman sets out to live her life to the fullest while she still can, with hopes of achieving one ultimate goal before it's too late - to get married.

SYNOPSIS:

Fern, a beautiful, single woman in her late twenties, has moved into a cheap, small oceanfront hotel—where she spent summers with her family as a child—after receiving a terminal medical prognosis.

She determines to live out the rest of her days in joy on the boardwalk she loves.

But it’s winter and the boardwalk is nearly lifeless.

Impulse takes hold of her. She rents out her half-bathroom to a professional video gamer named Skip, who seeks solitude and a life without sleep. She indoor skydives, but it’s indoors, which is lame and unsatisfying. She demands a promotion from her boss—reasoning with him that she is dying and can’t wait—and quits when denied.

She breaks into the ice cream shop below her hotel hoping for a taste of her past…but it’s closed for the winter and has no ice cream, dummy.

When impulse fails to fulfill, she is inspired by a wedding on the beach and resolves to fulfill her childhood dream of getting married before she dies.

With the help of her best friend Tiffany, she dives into the hellish modern world of dating.

A long walk on the beach with a self-proclaimed “nice guy” blows up in her face as he screams at her for calling the date short without sleeping with him.

She flirts with meatheads at the gym on the sand…and discovers they’re meatheads.

Finally, she connects with a surfer named Cole that she meets in front of her hotel.

They have a wonderful date, but she has a panic attack and passes out. Cole spends the next few days helping Fern destress by teaching her to skateboard and play basketball with beach “wind rules.”

Cole’s adventurous and fun nature put Fern at ease and satiate her impulses and she connects with him on a deep level through meaningful conversation and shared ideals.

Cole plans a day on the beach to teach Fern to surf and she drags a struggling Skip along. Cole proposes but Fern second guesses her goal, knowing her death would bring him pain, and she rejects the offer. Meanwhile, Skip has a life changing day outdoors.

After the death of Fern’s neighbor, an elderly, lonely woman, she reconsiders Cole’s proposal, knowing she doesn’t want to die alone.

Cole gladly accepts her back, explaining that he wants to be with her for any time she has left, for whatever joys it may bring.

Cole and Fern marry on the beach. Skip gains a new outlook and dates Tiffany.
