About Mary

Born and brought up in Northern Ireland, Mary McGuckian began writing and directing for theatre. She directed her first film based on Yeats' Words Upon the Window Pane in 1994 and it premiered at the Venice and Sundance Film Festivals.

She has produced, written, and directed over a dozen independent feature films since and has a collaborative approach when working with actors, including more recently Aja Naomi King and Barkhad Abdi in A Girl from Mogadishu (2019) and Orla Brady, Alanis Morrissette, Vincent Perez and Dominique Pinon in The Price of Desire (2015). Her adaptation of Patrice Le Conte’s Man on the Train (2011) starred Donald Sutherland and Larry Mullen Jr. Earlier films including The Amorality Trilogy Plus One featured an international ensemble cast including Lothaire Bluteau, Donna D’Errico, Colm Feore, Rupert Graves, Ian Hart, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jordi Molla, Andie MacDowell, Bill Patterson, Amanda Plummer, Jennifer Tilly, John Sessions, and Sarah Stockbridge amongst many others.

They have all earned awards in her films which have also picked up numerous best picture awards. She is a past recipient of the Annual Achievement Award at the WIFT Awards in Los Angeles and was one of three Irish writers selected by Screen Skills Ireland to participate in its Studio Showrunners Mentorship program in Los Angeles in 2019.

Her latest film A Girl from Mogadishu picked up a number of film festival audience and jury awards and was the recipient of the prestigious Cinema for Peace Foundation Women’s Empowerment Award during the Berlin Film Festival in 2020.

Currently focused on episodic content, her slate includes Anonymous Encounters with Danny Rose Media in the US and #IBelieveHer, an Irish-UK-Canadian co-production.
