About Lorna

Imagine speeding on a dark winding road through the Redwood Forest chased by armed White nationalists. That’s how close I came to being a hate crime victim. I fled for my life with the script I’d written. But it was an ice-bucket moment solidifying my commitment to creating diverse stories for film and television.

As the daughter of an amateur filmmaker and a film buff, I grew up in the Bronx, poor, in public housing. I learned to read at three watching movie credits. I wrote my first script at nine. I used my dad’s film & video equipment to make movies while critiquing film and television with my mom.

I graduated from high school at fifteen and went to college where I worked as a videographer, editor, and president of the film society. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Hamilton College, and a Master of Fine Arts in Communications/Film, with Distinction, from the University of New Orleans, LSU. Upon graduation I was offered a teaching position at the university, but given the choice of academia or making movies, I chose the world of filmmaking.

I’ve worked at myriad entertainment companies learning the industry from inside — researching, reading scripts, collecting box office data, production. My life's passion for the medium resulted in founding and operating my own boutique production company where I wrote and directed a collection of award-winning Young Adult narrative shorts.

I write diverse, often-time female-driven stories inspired by real life events focusing on timely, hot-button topics. I’m drawn to stories about BIPOC, LGBTQ+, outsiders and underdogs challenging the system, on emotional journeys intersecting race, class, sexuality and gender. My brand is crime, drama, thriller, history, sci-fantasy.

My honors include a two-time Academy Nicholl Fellowship Top Ten Percent Finalist, an AFI Directing Women's Workshop Finalist, an ABC TV Directing Fellowship Finalist, a Sundance Screenwriter Lab Semifinalist, and a Special Jury Prize from the International Documentary Festival of Three Continents. My work has been screened nationally, and internationally in Australia, Bangladesh, Cuba, Japan, S. Korea, Turkey, United Kingdom, Ukraine.

I believe I was spared that day in the Redwoods to tell stories to a global audience reflecting our unique times. I’m an African American female screenwriter/director/ filmmaker and mom raising a child in Los Angeles.

Unique traits: I'm a historian, amateur boxer, and a curandera in-training.
