Hey Voice Actors, if you haven't checked out VO Buzz Weekly, they are a great resource. I'm not in the VO business myself, but I've supervised two animated features for Universal Pictures, and I've met a few VO agents and VO Casting Directors in that process. Here's a great 2-part interview with a top VO agent. Definitely worth your time if you're entering the VO business. The interview covers commercial demos, animation demos, how to get an agent, how to conduct yourself with professionalism, how to handle yourself if you have an LA agent and a NY agent who both try to submit you for the same role, which demo reel characters are overdone and out-of-date, etc. http://www.vobuzzweekly.com/episodes/21/84/Sandie-Schnarr-PT1-EP17.html http://www.vobuzzweekly.com/episodes/22/84/Sandie-Schnarr-PT2-EP18.html
I look forward to responses when people hear how warm and giving, yet pragmatic, this agent is.

thanks for that, Regina. This is a field I'm also interested in. Cheers.

Hey Phillip, it's a great interview. The agent was kind enough to sign a woman I met when I saw her perform in a play in LA.
@Carmen, my pleasure. I love that interview because this agent is such a wonderful human being! I wouldn't have known that the "Indian guy" and the "witch" are way overdone on demo reels, but apparently, for VO pros, it's extremely obvious.
@Carmen, my pleasure! Good luck updating your reel!
Ahh fantastic. This is something I have been exploring.
Chuck and Stacey are great, known them for years. Anybody who is in (or wants to be in) the VO business ought to be watching their show.

Here's another resource - KCRW's Kim Masters interviews 3 top voice actors: http://www.kcrw.com/news-culture/shows/the-business/the-world-of-voice-a...
That's great, sadly Im in the UK and the town I live in is a dump. Still some good tips though.
Hi Tony, I'm sure there are many resources for UK voice actors too!
I love VO Buzz Weekly! The guests and topics are always relevant and entertaining as well! It feels like they are all sitting around in my living room and we're having a great time chatting and learning :-D
Great link Regina! I love Kim Masters and KCRW and I'll be listening to this tonight while I work!
My pleasure, Ryan! Enjoy!
Why does it seem, at least to me, that the same named talent is chosen for voice-over work in features? Tired of hearing "Ray Romano ', Morgan Freeman, etc. Does it guarantee box office success and large monetary returns?
@JD, the conventional thinking is that adults are more likely to be interested in seeing an animated movie with their kids if the adults recognize some of the voice stars in the cast. Certain stars have value in the family films space, and others do not. The stars can also promote the movie on Ellen, The Tonight Show, etc. Without name stars, it's much harder to get talk show promotion. Even though talk show viewership is not what it once was, parents still watch them. "Does it guarantee box office success?" No.
RL said, " .....adults are more likely to be interested in seeing an animated movie with their kids if the adults recognize some of the voice stars in the cast." Guess my thought processes aren't as constricted or mainstream. I could care less who is doing the voice acting. Maybe somebody else can be the voice of the wooly mammoth next time.
With the ICE AGE franchise in particular, I believe the thought is, "why mess with a winning recipe?"
I know you're right. I meant that as a joke. Film makers take chances, financiers don't.
It's not that black and white, JD. Do you think Chris Wedge & Carlos Saldanda said to Fox Animation, "Please let us cast John Doe instead of Ray Romano?" Did John Lasseter say to his own team at Pixar, "Man maybe we should pass on Tom Hanks for TOY STORY and go with John Johnson," or "I know Ellen DeGeneres has value with moms, but maybe we should go with Jane Janeson instead"? Filmmakers want big box office too.
I know it's not that black and white. Everyone wants everything they work on to be a success. But it's just as true that an unknown can bring as much or more to the character as a name. Tom Hanks in another voice acting role, yawn... I don't hear Woody, I hear Tom Hanks.

I think there's points on both sides, we have to consider that many of our big names are getting older and won't hold the same appeal as time goes on. So in some cases it may be beneficial for casters to find something new. As I say there's points on both sides.
Thanks for the great info Regina! Voice acting is something that I do on the side and enjoy
