Entry level DSLR cameras to make a short film

Filmmakers - what are your recommendations for best entry level DSLR cameras to make a short film?

Lindbergh E Hollingsworth

Hey there, Amanda ... Canon Rebels (T2i - T7i), Canon 5D Mark 2 or Mark 3, I've used all these, they still hold up (also note Act Of Valor was shot on Canon 5D Mark 2's). I've kept the selection given your question "best entry level DSLR and short film". You can rent these for a song, including lenses.

J.M. Gulmire

Oh man, I've been using my phone LOL

DSLR???

J.M. Gulmire - Phones have some killer qualities these days. I used to use a Rebel T4i when I shot several years ago so I'm wondering what is in that type of caliber that is newer on the market.

Ashley Renee Smith

Amanda Toney, you should definitely consider the Panasonic GH6! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooeXkMRnat4

Any mirrorless camera is more than sufficient nowadays. I filmed four episode of Killer Cases (Hulu / A&E) with a Fuji XT3 which can be purchased for under 1k on eBay.

And I'm also a Panasonic fan! I shot this feature with a GH5:

I'm a big fan of using cost-effective gear and making the best out of it!

Thank you so much Stephen Folker and @ashleyreneesmith!

I second Ashley Renee Smith's rec! In terms of the phone, it's always an interesting choice. Even gopros to make something like "Spree"

Nathan Woodward

I'm with Stephen on this one.

When it comes to entry-level DSLR cameras for making a short film, there are several options worth considering. The Canon EOS Rebel T7i (EOS 800D) offers a good balance of affordability and features, with its 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor, DIGIC 7 image processor, and Full HD video recording capabilities. The Nikon D5600 is another solid choice, featuring a 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor, EXPEED 4 image processor, and a wide range of compatible lenses. If you're willing to invest a bit more, the Sony Alpha a6400 provides advanced features such as a 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor, BIONZ X image processor, 4K video recording, and a tilting touchscreen. For those seeking even higher video capabilities, the Panasonic Lumix GH5 is a powerful option, offering a 20.3-megapixel Four Thirds sensor, Venus Engine image processor, 4K video recording, and in-body image stabilization. Keep in mind that in addition to the camera body, selecting suitable lenses is crucial for achieving the desired visual style. Take the time to research and compare features, read reviews, and consider your specific filmmaking needs and budget before making a final decision.

Thank you for your input @Fozan! I had looked into the Canon 5D Lindbergh E Hollingsworth had suggested and the Panasonic GHS that Stephen suggested, and ultimately I decided on the Canon EOS Rebel T7i (EOS 800D) - mainly because I was already familiar with the t4i that I had. If anyone else has suggestions, please keep them coming because I've received DMs from people thanking me for writing this post because it's helped them with their own camera selection. Thank you to everyone who's contributed here!

Amanda ... just some tech input here - since the T7i cannot shoot raw or log (unless you hack it), you can shoot "flat." Easy to set up in the profile on the camera, and "flat" will give you some latitude in post with exposure and color grading. Let me know, and I can forward the the settings ... your DP will know how to set this up as well ...

Great Amanda Toney. Just remember, any camera nowadays is 10x better than what was available 12+ years ago!

Thanks @All for tips, I’m bookmarking post so it shows up in my profile cos I’m buying one soon & need return to thread. Looking also for one that can not only shoot film well but is not that heavy to bring on & off trains.

I have a Nikon P950. It can shoot on 4K Cinema. But I'm just starting to learn myself to make short films.
