How did you do it?

I want to write and film my own feature length movie, but I am lacking funds for more equipment because let's face it, you can't make a feature length film with one camera. How did you get your start and how much did you spend on your first film?

Dan MaxXx

BS. Most indie shoots use 1 camera. Look into Cinema History and most productions use 1 camera on set. "Moonlight" used 1 camera.

James Drago

Limitations are usually what you put on yourself. Another way of saying I agree with Dan.

Antonio Bamgbose

My friend and I shot our first feature film with one camera, one radio mic.

And it got nominated for an award too i might add

I understand every word you are all saying, but it would literally take me forever. But if you guys have that much faith that I can do it, the I will.

Mark W. Travis

Lachele. Don't use the excuse of not enough equipment or not enough money to make your film. Start now. First step: How strong is your script? Start there. Because if the script is weak, the film will be weak. That's where you should put your energy and attention now. Once you have that (or think you have that) you can move forward. And now you need actors (I am assuming you are directing, is that right?) and are you prepared to work with them and get the performances you need? So much to do before you even begin thinking about the camera.

Go for it and don't look back Lachele...

Here is the link to the film I did... you can achieve so much with the right people around you.

Do it, by any means necessary. I think Issa Rae is a perfect example of what you don't need in order to enjoy success. Tell strong relatable stories and everything will follow.

Elisabeth Meier

Wow. I needed this myself. Thanks, Lachele, for the question and all others for the encouragement.

I shot my first film over two different weekends b/c checking out equipment on Friday and returning it Monday only counts for one day with rental houses. It cost me $14,500 but returned well over $100,000 b/c a distributor loved it and pushed it.
