Post-Production : How do you find a job as a video editor in 2024? by Dustin Richardson

How do you find a job as a video editor in 2024?

Does anyone have tips on how to find work as a video editor? Are there any recent grads out there who recently went through this step? I know it hasn't been the best time to find work in the industry lately. I'm a recent college grad. I use ZipRecruiter, Staff Me Up, Indeed, etc., but I never see many jobs come in for editors on those.

I have a lot of editing experience, but my work has been for unpaid positions. I'd love to find a paid job similar to the ones I've had. I love editing interviews (in-person/online), red-carpet events, promos, compilations, etc. Thank you!

I just read book you should check out “A Long Time Ago in a Cutting Room Far Far Away” by Paul Hirsch. Obviously he edited Star Wars but it’s his story of getting gigs in the editing biz. I’m not an editor I’m a pro guitarist but the book was excellent.

The only people I know working steadily in those type of positions work for a company that provides a range of post-services for clients. Most of those typically hire from within, so the best approach is to research companies and apply for any position there, even if it's not editor. Most senior editors starts elsewhere. Assistant editor jobs in Hollywood do exist but almost always start off internships as a post or edit PA. Finally, work that reel and make sure it's exceptional, get as much feedback as possible on it.

I have made over $50k on upwork as a video editor. Mostly in the educational sector. Micro-niche is the word. Have recently gained ground doing Promotional Videos and Sizzle Reels for Entertainment companies. Corporate IT and Small Businesses.
