I fed a partial outline into ChatGPT to see how it would finish the story. What came back sounded like a movie, which was initially exciting, but it was full of tropes I'd seen before. When you think about it, that makes sense -- all it can do is regurgitate what has been written before. So the value there was to show what tropes to avoid and then use my screenwriter brain to write something new and different!
The chat software also doesn't know theme. Yes, it can remix plot elements, but it doesn't have a point-of-view, a thesis to put forward. That's up to us.
Yep, if you want to be a filmmaker, better know how and when to use AI. I am old enough to remember when film camera industry became digital. A lot of cinematographers and post-production editors & colorists either learn on the fly or were jobless.
I thought about it as I muddled through a script ,over and over again.I guess Iam old school ,lack the ribbon typewriter days, but it scares me . And I also question it as far as real emotional connects .I really don't think an AI can emotionally charge the writing, but it wuld be great for spell chec................no pun intendeded......an yet I digress.
I used ChatGPT the other day to write a short story, and it included all of the elements I requested, but it was a little trite, (like Mike Boas said above). I think it could be useful for brainstorming and getting ideas, but definitely not for the finishing touches.
I use it for brainstorming and getting more details and information than searching online. it helps to give so much information about topics I have little or no idea.
I’ve used ChatGPT for quick research, weird math calculations (How much does $1 billion in gold weigh?), and brainstorming character names. It’s saved me a ton of time on tasks I’m poor at.
A bit like my legs. I will use artificial intelligence when I no longer have access to my own REAL INTELLIGENCE.
I have said this many times before. This is accepting you are incapable of achieving this on your own. It is not a short cut, or a new version of an older technology. It is admitting defeat.
I can put an ai film together in a week for like 1000 USD myself. They are more like comics. But they will eventually be scary even for a listers because it will be real.
Oliver Le Roux really? I will pay you $2000 US dollars to make me a minimum 80min movie following "save the cat" story structure, main character seeking redemption, action or horror genre, delivered output in 4K high-res & separate audio tracks. Dont need in a week but finish by Thanksgiving.
Send me an email with the first page of the script and i’ll render out a scene and if you like the style and the result then we can proceed as you requested.
Dan G, you are correct. Oliver is making an animation using AI, since it is not live action. But is the screenplay also generated with AI? I would assume based on his interaction with Dan MaXx.
I just find this entire “let’s all kill art with AI” group and lie to ourselves while we do it crowd tiring.
Can I suggest to RB that Stage32 starts an AI lounge so these stop polluting a lounge for artists.
I used Script Writer a bit more than a year ago because I thought it interesting (Pre ChatGPT ?). So many ideas in my head and a couple of paragraphs written down on a several notepads. The question was, what if I had an assistant to help me with some of these? It didn´t work. 4 months ago I gave CHAT GPT a try. Holy Doritos, I couldn´t believe it! AI is improving by leaps and bounds. It´s scary. What will we have by next year?
It's happening...sooner or later...and if I find a particular script filmable and costs are low, why not?
I recently had a scene from my newest spec "thrown" into AI generator for an image. Nailed it at second attempt with only me using vague description. Imagine now throwing entire scripts in one of them machines some 20 years from now...

Strongly against that.

Great question, Oliver Le Roux. I'm of the mindset that words come out of the abundance of the heart or soul so I won't be using AI for scripts.
yes!!!!

I think AI would be good if we wanted more of what we've been getting - but if you want something new and interesting, Ai can't do that.

Oliver Le Roux Not sure about Danish law, but under US law, AI products cannot be copyrighted.
Personally, there is not temptation on my behalf to use AI, it just cannot do what I do.

Thinking about it - but not without actors.
William Rogers I wouldn't use it to write my screenplay either. I was thinking about using it to produce a movie.

I already used AI once, it was really funny to develop ideas together, cool experiment

I wouldn’t use it to write a script. Maybe to explore ideas or characterization but not write the script.

If I wrote scripts with AI I would no longer call myself a writer.

I have received your email. I'm doing some research
I wouldn't use AI to help write or finish a script - that's just downright lazy! But if AI could help me animate a film, then I might look into it.
Come on people. The subject line says this is about "AI feature film making" not screenwriting. I think there is a difference.
