Copyright of my screenplay question

Hi everyone on Stage32 Can anyone give me an answer to this question? I've written a screenplay which is an adaptation of my book (which i own the rights to via WGA and is published on Amazon now including ISDN). Therefore, do i need further legal cover as regarding the screenplay (of the same name as my ebook) and if so where is a good place to do this? (i've heard that registering it with Sundance covers all the angles? is this true) Thank you for any advice Phill

Marvin Willson

Register the screenplay with the Library of congress (LOC). You can do it online and it costs $35.00. This is the only way to cover "all the angles". The fact it's based on your own, published book, gives you greater protection too. Books should be registered with the LOC also. WGA will not help you in the event of a book dispute.

I'm in the UK where copyright is automatic, but I do wonder if it's worth copyrighting in the US -- may do so if a script is getting read higher up or being passed around by an agent.

Good to know Jacqueline, thanks!

Most (decent) US producers wont read it if it's not registered any ways.

Are you asking do you need to copyright your screenplay. I do believe you do have to copyright you screenplay, even if you own the rights because it is an adaptation of your book. I copyright my material at the Library of Congres: http://www.copyright.gov and you can do it right online. I hope this have been some help. I wish you all the best and much success!

Thanks Stacey and Crystal...Marvin has recommended LOC and that seems like the one at the top of the copyright ladder..Piece of mind for 35 bucks, it's done
