Screenwriting : How do you come up with your next script? by Imo Wimana Chadband

How do you come up with your next script?

So being finished with my debut script. It's on to the next. I took position on my bed and started picking my brain for the concept to bring to life. I ran through scenario after scenario, some seemed like the next script, others were just-MEH!

I picked apart life events, pondering if they were worthy enough to turn into a story. Long story short...I fell asleep haha. And I was so engrossed in this thought process that while I slept, guess what my dream was?...Trying to figure out my next script concept! Except this time, I actually was living the concepts as a dream, so I would actually be in the movie itself. Cool experience right? I could actually realize myself consciously-if that's even logical-analyzing the script concept as I played in the movie in my dream.

I jumped from movie to movie in my dream, until...BINGO! I can hear myself deliberating...and THAT WAS IT! The concept I believed to have found to be a story passionate enough to be told. It was like my mind put me to sleep to find the answer I was looking for, as I woke up after I decided on a concept.

But...guess what happened?...

I woke up, and for the life of me-COULDN'T REMEMBER THE DANG DREAM!!! AIN'T THAT A...!

So after punching air for a couple mins AIRING OUT my frustrations-get it? "Airing out" :D Anywho...

I sat at my laptop, and just dug into my mind once more...Nope. Nope. Nope. Idea after idea I tossed into my virtual trash can..until...DING! The bulb hovered over my head. I found it!

So...that's the tale of how my second script concept came to be. I'm about to get right on it and start writing. How is it for you guys? How do you know when you've found a concept you're passionate enough about to make into a script? What's your selection process out of the many ideas streaming through your mind?

I have about 50 loglines and ideas. I’ll just start working on whatever. I stop, change, start again and then one will click.

Danny Manus

A Watched pot never boils. i never sit around trying to force an idea to come. When im inspired, im inspired. If you're ever really searching, read the newspaper or twitter and theres usually something that will click to something else.

Cherie Grant

Ok, so this is gonna sound like gloating, but I never run out of ideas. And I have so many ideas atm I think it would take the rest of my life to finish them.

Phillip E. Hardy, "The Real Deal"

Danny's right. Ideas that pop into my head out of nowhere are the best.

Bryan Carrier

You can’t force an idea to take root. It has to come naturally. Usually the idea or the character comes out of nowhere. When I have a creative idea I try and forget it. If I can’t and it knaws at me or the characters dialogue presents itself I know it’s a story.

Deanna Harvey

Something else to keep in mind. Make sure you're constantly feeding the machine that is your mind. If you don't put anything in, you won't get anything out.

Thank you guys for the input. I do agree with with the thoughts shared here. I think it came across as if I had nothing in the burner, and was trying to grasp an idea. But, It was more like I have a bunch of ideas but prioritizing which inspired me enough to pen next, and not simply grab at one of the ideas bouncing around in my head you know. I don't want to just write ideas because I have them, I want to choose the one that speaks to me most and ignites that excitement to develop and build. Needless to say I decided on one, and I'm itching to get it out. I've started and the words are flowing. I really appreciate this community. I'm new to the industry, and while passionate about my craft, I learn a lot from you guys, and I'll be great because you guys choose to impart your knowledge. Appreciate you always taking the time to give thoughts, advice, and guidelines.
