Screenwriting apps question

Hi there,

So I am still in the process of writing my first screenplay. I know for a fact that there is a ton of screenwriting apps, some that are free, and some that cost money. For a first-time screenwriter, which is the best free screenwriting app to use on a laptop, or even on a mobile device?

Maurice Vaughan

Hi, Hunter Huiet. I use WriterDuet on my laptop. It's free (for the first three projects), but you can pay a low monthly fee for extra features. https://www.writerduet.com/

WriterDuet is fast.

Jeremiah Unom

Milanote is a great app... Free and easy to operate.

Hunter Huiet

Maurice Vaughan I have heard great things about WriterDuet. Definitely will check it out!

Hunter Huiet

Jeremiah Unom I have never heard of Milanote! I will take a look at it!

Jonathan Kramer

I'm using Writer Solo, the free app from Writer Duet which I love! https://writersolo.com/#5FM6W~***~branch=-

Hunter Huiet

Jonathan Kramer I will check it out for sure!

Celtx is helpful. And you can start with a free license, if I recall. It's a cloud-based service, so you can access it from any device. Given it's your first time, I wouldn't get overly caught up in all the 'bells and whistles' needed for a production draft. Just keep it simple, and follow the basic structure rules. All of which can be done via a few services. Moreover, just write! :)

I’ve used Celtx on desktop and iPad as well as Final Draft Mobile on iPad and Final Draft on desktop. Each has positives and negatives. Celtx is a great starter app!

Someone can give a shot at these. Word has a screenplay template you can check out: https://templates.office.com/en-us/screenplay-tm02805802

You can turn a Word doc into a Screenplay template: https://www.awn.com/blog/how-turn-microsoft-word-terrific-screenwriting-...

You can even get away with just a text editor for a short time. The formatting will be wrong. But you can get your story out and worry about formatting later. Here is simple way of getting that done.

Final Draft is recognised as one of the key players. Fairly expensive, but it does an awful lot.

Hello Hunter! I struggled with free apps for some time before realizing the time I spent fixing the outputs of the free software was worth paying for something better. I use Arc Studios to write my feature length scripts and have nothing but positives to say about it. Best of luck in finding something that works for you!
