The WGA Strike - what the viewers are thinking

First up:

“In the survey, 83% of American respondents said [they] were aware of the strike and about 60% said the strike could be significantly disruptive to their viewing activity later in the year.”

Well, that’s a good sign. Awareness. Check.

“U.S. respondents were more concerned about their favourite TV shows falling behind schedule than movies, with 39% saying they were more worried about their favourite shows, 32% saying they were equally worried about shows and movies, and 1% saying they were more worried about movies.”

Concerned. Check.

My great hope would be that if the tourniquet of the strike is tightened very tightly, and the flow of new material stops, then maybe, just maybe the viewers would call the surgery, sorry Streamer, to report the sensation of viewer numbness then this may help the perfect storm to form and add to the distress of Producers and get them to put an offer on the table that restores the flow and stops writers being the most undervalued talent in the business.

Numbness detected soon. Check.

The Writers Guild of America strike is on U.S. entertainment consumers' minds and the potential delay of new content concerns them, according to a new survey from Whip Media. In the survey, 83% of Ame…

I turned off my streaming subscriptions, went to LA and cheered on the strikers, and am eagerly awaiting for what SAG-AFTRA does next month and how that impacts the studios.

I'm not worried about how this impacts my life as a viewer. I'm worried how this impacts my life as someone who wants to work in the industry lol

Ty Strange

That's great! Now, how does this info make its way to the AMPTP?

Hollywood is a for-profit industry. It is pro-business and pro-capitalism, not pro-art. And unfortunately, capitalism and morality do not exist in the same sphere.

No shit... Something needs to change for the writers and their place in the industry. The strike is actually good news. People need to see the bigger picture sometimes.

SAG is the next big question...

Maurice Vaughan

Those percentages are higher than I would've thought, Geoff Hall. Hope they keep going up.

Geoff Hall

Marcel Nault Jr. totally agree. The survey of course asked the questions, and put those words in the respondents mouths. It’s a shame they didn’t ask if they supported the strike and if they would lobby the Streamers for better pay-rise and conditions for the writers!!

Geoff Hall

GiGi Raines I wonder how the DGA negotiations are going?

Niki H

I'm really hoping this could be a powerful year for artists. SAG is in support and if we band together with as many creatives and unions as possible we have more leverage than we've had in a long time.

Eon C. Rambally

Appreciate seeing this post Geoff Hall! The commentaries were very important to read!

@NikiHayes (sorry, tagging is off…again) but…

I’m hoping that the three unions will come together and tip these negotiations into a win for all concerned. I’m a Candidate Member of the WGGB and so my heart is for recognition for the writers. The WGGB a has come out in solidarity with the WGA.

Geoff Hall

@Eon C Rambally thank you. Whatever the context of these reports, my hope is that people will begin to understand a little more about the life and plight of the writers who create the programmes and films that they love.
