Screenwriting : Transitions Between Scenes by Jason Bullock

Transitions Between Scenes

I have this short film about two adults who used to be high school sweethearts. They meet up at after a conference. I have them set in three locations; a restaurant, a ice cream store, and a hotel.

The problem is the transition between those scenes. Right now it's just hard cuts but I don't feel that's right. What are some transition pieces I can put in between them to help move the story forward?

I'm not a screenwriter by trade. So any help would be appreciated.

Do you have establishing shots between locations. Something like:

Conference room, Shot of street shows the cars etc to establish the wealth of the area, then inside restaurant them at table.

Maurice Vaughan

You can use similar objects to transition between scenes, Jason Bullock. Example: When the characters are in high school, they could eat ice cream at an ice cream store, then in the present story, the adults could eat ice cream at the restaurant. The camera could focus on the teenagers' ice cream, then on the adults' ice cream.

I have ideas similar to what Maurice is suggesting. Having like a mini-montage of the first scene (two shots or so) then a cut to similar montage to the second location.

Doug Nelson

You're a Director & Editor so you already know how to do this. A Cross Fade or a Fade thru Black, maybe a one action line scene (my preference). The Fade denotes a change in time & location.

Elaborate? Wanna do one shot movie or what? If so, check "Russian Arc" perfect one shot feature film, not the "wannabe" 1917 tryout...

Clock Wipe. ;)

Matthew Parvin

TBH, I don't use transitions between scenes unless it's beginning/ending of flashbacks, or at the beginning/ending of the script. I leave the transitions to the director.

OP is the director.
