OTT & Transmedia : 1# Ten places that… by Ugo Cavallo

1# Ten places that…

I share with you the first writing exercises. This is not to be understood as limited to cinema, it can be useful for creating a novel, for the concept of a TV series or for a video game (that's why I wrote this in transmedia).

Write down 10 places that you like/know and that you would like to see in one of your works/films.

I share mine:

1 Palazzina di Stupinigi (https://images.app.goo.gl/s3KpVYYUbq9WUiPj7)

2 Castello di Nichelino (https://images.app.goo.gl/oDjSH6qqXKrXkXQH8)

I don't have a list of 10. But, I am working on a graphic novel that begins in a Dystopian version of Chicago and features a few areas I love.

Here are a few pieces I did for the book that feature the city's skyline at night.

The pic I posted is one of my FAVE places. Buckingham Fountain. This place has a special place in my heart because my stepfather would take me there at night so we could watch the lights change color.

And, in honor of my stepdad, I included it in the book.

Those would be great places for works/films, Ugo Cavallo. Here are 10 general locations I would like to see in my Horror scripts (probably as the main locations):

#1) Building rooftop

#2) Mall

#3) State fair

#4) Superstore

#5) Old castle

#6) Gas station

#7) Ice rink

#8) Abandoned music concert

#9) Office building

#10) Laser tag arena

Maurice Vaughan

The Buckingham Fountain is beautiful, Elaine Haygood. I think it's great you included it in your book in honor of your stepdad.

Ugo Cavallo

Elaine Haygood I really appreciated your input. I invite you to reflect and accept this challenge, next time you travel or walk through your city, find 10 places you can use for your works. Good luck!

Ugo Cavallo

Maurice Vaughan Great first try, but as a writer don't be too general, we always have to strive to be precise while crafting a story. A Superstore? Well, which one? Where? Why exactly that? Having a minimal idea is always better than making a choice without a clue. Same advice given above, next time you travel or explore your city, mark 10 places (precise, please) that you can use in your work.

Ugo Cavallo

Never be caught unprepared. Although you may never use these locations, you can write them down on paper and keep them in a drawer, but having 10 locations in your pocket will certainly make you appear more prepared when they ask you if you already have any locations in mind. You are screenwriters, do not be caught unprepared :P :.)

Maurice Vaughan

Thanks for the advice, Ugo Cavallo. I use general locations in my scripts because they're micro-budget and low-budget, so it's easier/cheaper to use general locations than specific ones, and I can be more creative with general locations. I like your "Never be caught unprepared" advice. I can do a similar thing when I'm online. Bookmark/download locations.

I love Buckingham Fountain, Elaine Haygood! I went to college in the South Loop and I loved to walk over to the fountain after sunset to watch the lights change. I'm glad that you also have such positive memories of it.

Such a great question! Most of my work is science fiction and fantasy but in the latter, I do have a few places in mind...

#1 Shimabara Castle: https://okinawa.stripes.com/travel/story-behind-shimabara

#2 Puerto Rico: Old San Juan: https://sanjuanpuertorico.com/old-san-juan/

#3 Sagrada Familia in Barcelona Spain: https://handluggageonly.co.uk/2015/07/17/22-sights-you-have-to-see-when-...

#4 Barcelona Cathedral: https://handluggageonly.co.uk/2015/07/17/22-sights-you-have-to-see-when-...

Ugo Cavallo thanks for the encouragement. But, I also write primarily in the scifi-fantasy-horror genres and most of my stories don't feature that many earth-bound locations.

However, there are some locations I love because they remind me of sites from some of my fave books. I will list them here in a day or 2. I'm actually facing a deadline at present.

Ugo Cavallo

Elaine Haygood Ops! Even in deep space there will always be something that is taken from reality. Guys and fellow writers, whatever your genre, from horror to fantasy (do I have to say that Tolkien's middle ground exists in New Zealand?) Always remember to gather ideas from the places you see or know ;)

Sam Sokolow

I've always wanted to sheet a scene at Grand Central Station in NYC. That's my #1 spot..

Ugo Cavallo

Nice! 9 left ;) Sam Sokolow

Ugo Cavallo Tolkien's Middle Earth was inspired by many places in the English countryside as well as some historical places/sites elsewhere in Europe.

Peter Jackson and his team at WETA built those sets in New Zealand because that's where they were shooting and a lot of those places had to be digitally enhanced to get the exact look and feel they needed.

Besides, those stories are primarily Fantasy, set in "an age gone by". Just like how the original Star Trek films primarily used a quick shot of the Golden Gate Bridge to show an example of San Francisco and Earth.

Perhaps, a better example would have been Bladerunner. Set in a dystopian future featuring a city that is an amalgamation of New York, LA, and my hometown, Chicago.

And yes, I will apologize for not having taken part in your "exercise" in a way you consider acceptable.
