Screenwriting : A message I received today by Regina Lee

A message I received today

I received this message in my Stage 32 inbox today.  I don't even see a previous message from this person in my inbox.  Maybe I missed it.  Maybe I deleted it accidentally or intentionally.  Maybe there was a tech glitch and I never received it.  My point in posting it anonymously is to invite people to ask themselves (and me to ask myself), how we want to present ourselves and if flies are drawn to honey or to vinegar.  Does this communication get me closer to my goal or further away from my goal? Are we each obligated to respond to every message we receive, no matter the number of messages? Are we each obligated to be sure no message is ever missing? Might the person I'm reaching out to have been on location away from home in August (like I was - shooting in Atlanta)? (Like I said, I don't see any message from this person in my inbox.  My profile page also clearly lists that I cannot accept unsolicited submissions and must delete them UNREAD to protect the sender and to protect myself.  I don't know if that is what this person was writing about.) Now you can question my manners or the sender's manners, and that is why I post anonymously not to expose the sender's identity. Have we taken care of relationships as best we can, or haven't we?

Hey Regina

I sent the above message three months ago. I completely understand that you are not interested although I think its something you will regret in the long run but hey such is life!

Anyway what I don't understand is that you didn't even have the courtesy to reply. Manners cost nothing but I suppose if you were not taught that as a kid I'm wasting my time telling you now.

Doug Nelson

Regina - it's become an every day, all day fact of life in today's rather rude, crude unsophisticated anonymous e-mail society. I don't see an answer - it wan't that way in those good/not so good olden times. Grampa was right when he said that my generation was going to Hell and I think it's obvious that the new generation is on that same path. I'd like to say just get over it but they're everywhere, all the time. You have my sympathy.

Anthony Moore

It seems that person writing you is the one who doesn't understand or was taught the manners that "cost nothing". The attitude presented is one of childish anger and entitlement. No one in this life owes you anything.

If they wrote you on a previous occasion and didn't get a response in a reasonable amount of time, the proper and courteous thing to do would have been to write another email, including; noting that they send an email previously, a summary of the information from the previous email, and valid contact information so that they can be contacted.

You only get one time to make a good first impression and this person has blow that out of the water with both barrels.

Martina Cook

Passive aggressive message...so cliché! My suggestion is, delete and forget. Not worth your time and worrying :)

Jacob Buterbaugh

I've noticed that some aspiring writers, filmmakers, and actors seem to think that people in the industry owe them something. It's probably not the best mindset or approach.

Regina Lee

Thank you, Doug, Anthony, Martina, and Jacob. I appreciate the good will. Damien, you're obviously entitled to your opinion. President Trump has not taken away our freedom of speech just yet! Hope everyone has a good weekend.

Typical emotional response from a person hungry for success but in the process shooting him/herself (although it sounds like a dude) in the foot thereby. Unfortunate response, though. Like you said, Regina, a number of things could have happened, I have had to reach back out to different people for a few years now and some respond and some don´t. What ever the fact, this unprofessional behaviour is partially the reason why it´s a tough road to "break in". Not everyone knows how to conduct themselves in professional businness environments. Like always, I could be wrong, of course.

Regina Lee

Thank you for your good will, Owen, Dan, CJ, Zlatan, and Anthony.

Gilberto - Come on, that´s such a lame excuse :) It´s like saying "I held a gun, I knew it kills people, I pointed it at this guy and squeezed this Little thing called a trigger and the gun fired and the guy I was pointing it at died. I didn´t know that was gonna happen". Really? Really?? And by the way, we´re not commenting on a set of rules, just common sense or lack there of. Knowledge of screenwriting as an artform or Craft has nothing to do with having some common sense and some basic respect for others regardless of their own Dreams, wishes or desires. Again, I could be wrong.
