Financing / Crowdfunding : Launching a Fundraiser by Ethan Frome

Launching a Fundraiser

-Posting again for a second opinion- I'm looking to launch a Kickstarter campaign for a Web-series. Any advice on where to start? How much work it will take? (don't be general and say "a lot of work" be specific please) What the day to day efforts of pushing the campaign require? Tools I'll need to help present the campaign in the best light? How to price the amount I'll need? In my head $30K - $50k would cover it but i could be wrong and need more or less. I don't really have access to free resources or spaces to shoot. It's a dramatic comedy set in NYC for context. Feedback welcomed.

Are you wondering if the Kickstarter campaign itself will cost $30K - $50K or is that how much you're looking to raise?

Ethan Frome

No I never said anything about the cost of a campaign. I asked about how to price the amount I'll need for my project and gave a rough figure of what i was thinking of.

  1. It is a full time job. 2. It takes MONEY to promote, and you MUST advertise via things like facebook ads, etc 3. You should already have an expansive email list and social networking reach because 4. kickstarter, indiegogo etc. are just websites, they do not promote you, and there are NOT hordes of people out there just waiting to fund projects. You must sell them,
Paulina Lagudi

Ethan Frome ok great! If you have $30K - $50K to spend on a crowdfunding campaign that is definitely going to help you get a very big reach. However, you don't necessarily need THAT much money. I would use some money to hiring a team that can help you with your marketing. Whether it's PR, a social media intern, or another producer that can work on creating the creative campaign so you can create a story that excites people to want to invest/donate in your upcoming project. You want to make sure everything is concise and coming from the same voice. Newsletters via Mailchimp, Facebook ads, social media posts, etc. should all have the same look, tone, font, and voice as well as always link back to your campaign. If you can partner with any organizations that are related to your core audience for your project to help get your campaign out there to more people, then even better! Get a team, give yourself time, create a concise story and voice.

Paulina Lagudi, Vet TV raised ~$300k via crowdfunding, it did cost them ~$50K in advertising and they had a very large built in constituency... Most will not raise near that amount. And really, $50k in 2019 is no longer a big advertising budget - corporate greedmongers like facebook and google have been creeping up the costs to bizarre levels while returns are dropping even faster.

Ethan Frome

Paulina Lagudi You've completely misunderstood me somehow maybe i was not clear enough. The 30k - 50k was the amount i'm thinking of raising through the campaign. I was asking the best way to determine how much to raise for my project. Its the amount I'm looking to raise not spend. I never mentioned anything about spending or cost.

Read RB"s book on crowdsourcing. Not joking. He's offering the audiobook free at the moment.

Paulina Lagudi

Eva Neide yes let's chat!! would love to learn from you. Ethan Frome I apologize. I totally misunderstood you.

Katheryn Maddox Haddad

Matt Bailey, where do I find RB's book?

John T. Trigonis

Hey there Ethan Frome! (Real name? Loved the book by Edith Wharton as a kid!) Feel free to pick up a copy of my book CROWDFUNDING FOR FILMMAKERS (which RB's book cites plenty in his couple chapters on crowdfunding) and put everything it says to practice: http://goo.gl/xZmls4 My book covers all of your questions and more.

As for raising $30K+, my one recommendation I can make –– and this comes from literally ten years in the crowdfunding for film industry, with five of those working at Indiegogo on their mid- to top-tier campaigns –– is that your goal should be set lower for your first campaign.

Now, if you absolutely NEED to raise that amount, then I suggest you start with RB's book to learn how to build and audience for your film first, then graduate to my book for the tips, tactics, and strategies that make crowdfunding for film work so well.

OCONUS; retiring; maybe give away fiction? Production / Philippine/ Thailand/maybe JP

Great advice from everyone, good perspective

Best Advice: Microsoft Excel. Get you a copy and buy you a program for the whole project for financial analysis. Pre, All Activities of Production, and post Production. Only you then can

make your own analysis of what costs are, how to cut costs, how to achieve quality and

in th eend, how to have a marketable product. YOU ARE THE BOSSL PROBLEM; IF YOU

HALF ASS IT, YOU WILL HAVE A HALF ASS RESULT. IF YOU CAN NOT READ A FINANCIAL

check out Seed and Spark if you haven't already. They are a crowdfunding tool specifically for film. They also have videos you can watch for free with tips about crowdfunding. Even if you do not use them as your platform the tips can be helpful

Thanks, Jessica. I've been holding on to my email notice from you until I had time for it. I have an email list of about 4000 interested in the genre of my proposed TV series. Also, I have a couple thousand followers on FB, though they aren't all notified I posted anything. I need to raise funds to build the town for the shooting site. If the public likes it, it will continue for 8-10 years, so needs to be built right. I'm going to build it out Ihttps://comeflywithme-tv.com/anthony-jones/ I have access to 320 acres out in the desert my city is letting me use. I don't have a final price tag yet but m hoping for around $20,000 unless the building code requires we put in bathrooms and dig a well. Now, to check out your site.

Ethan Frome

John T. Trigonis I just ordered both books. I've watched some of your videos so I know It'll be worth my time. Thanks.
